Shops
The shopping centre comprises 120 retail units,[2] with a further 16 units in the adjacent retail park,[3] with Sainsbury's & Asda as anchor tenants. The shopping centre offers over 2500 free parking spaces and has an on-site bus station.
Developments
In December 2008, PLM Illumination's installed over 300 handrail lights throughout the car park and walkways at the centre to improve pedestrian safety.[4]
Since 2009, work at the centre has included erecting new entrances and improving the atrium.[5]
In May 2021, 8 electric vehicle charging points were installed near the McDonald's & JD Sports car park entrances.[6]
Retail Park
The Galleries Retail Park is a retail park that opened in November 2008, as part of a £20 million regeneration program at the galleries.[7] The retail park is located directly adjacent to the main centre, and compromises of 156,500 sq ft of retail space with 16 units.
Major tenants include M&S Simply Food, River Island, New Look & Halfords.[8]

Rail
Chester-le-Street railway station is 6 miles from the centre, with frequent bus services provided from near by bus stops, with a journey time of approximately 30 minutes. [9]
Sunderland station is 8 miles from the centre, with onwards bus services from the nearby Sunderland interchange which take approximately 45 minutes.[10]
Metro
The closest metro station is Heworth Metro Station. The remainder of the journey can be completed by bus, using the Connections 4 service (provided by Go North East) with journeys taking approximately 30 minutes.[11]
