Gekijō-ban Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (劇場版 呪術廻戦 0, "Jujutsu Kaisen 0 the Movie") is a Japanese dark fantasy[1] anime film, based on the manga series Jujutsu Kaisen 0, a prequel to the Jujutsu Kaisen series, both created by Gege Akutami. The film, produced by MAPPA and distributed by Toho, is set to premiere theatrically in Japan on December 24, 2021.

Production

The film was announced after the Jujutsu Kaisen anime television series finale in March 2021.[8] The film is produced by MAPPA and directed by Sunghoo Park, with scripts by Hiroshi Seko and character designs by Tadashi Hiramatsu.[9][10] Park commented that the movie will include new content not featured in the original Jujutsu Kaisen 0 manga.[11] King Gnu will perform the film's theme song "Itto" (一途, "The Only Way").[12]

In casting Megumi Ogata, Gege Akutami, envisioned the character as a "neutral, soft, and kind, and there is also a big emotional swing and head." Ogata's name was mentioned as an example of an actor close to that, and in response to that, the director Sunghoo Park and the anime staff unanimously decided to cast her. Ogata herself said she would like to cherish the original image and create her own image of Yuta with all the hearts of the team in good faith.[13] Ogata describes him as an attractive character due to how stronger he becomes when interacting with others.[14]

Kana Hanazawa voices Rika. She decided to audition when seeing the original series and the anime, as she became a fan of it. Rika's childhood left a major impression on her and looked forward to interacting with Ogata.[15]

Release

The film, distributed by Toho,[8][16] is set to premiere theatrically in Japan on December 24, 2021.[17][16] The film will have IMAX screenings in Japan and is set to premiere in 418 theaters.[18]

A novel adaptation by Baraddo Kitaguni, based Hiroshi Seko's script, is set to be published on the film's premiere date.[19] A Jujutsu Kaisen #0.5 Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School booklet will be given to film's audience members and will have a print run of 5 million copies. The booklet will include an exclusive nine-page manga by Akutami, about the daily life of Okkotsu and the other first-year students, the thumbnail layouts for the first chapter of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 manga, the film's designs, a question-and-answer session with Akutami, and comments by the anime's staff and cast.[20]
