Georgia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010

Georgia competed in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, returning after a year's absence. Georgian broadcaster GPB internally selected Sofia Nizharadze to sing for Georgia at the Contest in May 2010. Nizharadze performed six songs on 27 February. "Shine" was chosen to be sung at the contest in Oslo, Norway, after the votes of a public televote and a professional jury. The song was written by Hanne Sørvaag, Harry Sommerdahl and Christian Leuzzi, and was Sørvaag's third Eurovision composition.[1][2]

Before Eurovision

Artist selection

On 16 January 2010, the broadcaster held a press conference and announced that they had internally selected Sofia Nizharadze to represent Georgia in Oslo. During the press conference, GPB announced that a national final would be held to select her song.[3][4]

National final

GPB announced that a public song submission would be opened from 17 January 2010 until 3 February 2010.[5] Over 100 songs were received by the submission deadline and an expert commission selected the top six songs from the received submissions.[6] The songs were announced on 9 February 2010.[7][8] The national final took place on 27 February 2010 at the Tbilisi Event Hall in Tbilisi, hosted by Davit Katsarava and was broadcast on 1 TV GPB as well as online at the broadcaster's website 1tv.ge and the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv.[9] All six competing songs were performed by Sofia Nizharadze and the winning song, "Shine", was determined upon by the 50/50 combination of the votes of an expert jury and a public SMS vote.[1]

Promotion

Prior to the contest, Nizharadze travelled to Azerbaijan to specifically promote "Shine" as the Georgian entry by performing during the Azerbaijani national final on 2 March 2010.[2][10]

At Eurovision

Georgia competed in the second semi-final of the contest on 27 May, performing in the 16th slot, and qualified for the final, placing 3rd with 106 points.[11] The public awarded Georgia 5th place with 102 points and the jury awarded 1st place with 117 points.[12] Georgia came 9th in the final, with 136 points, with the public awarding Georgia 9th place with 127 points and the jury awarding 4th place with 160 points.[12][13] This is the best result Georgia has achieved at the contest so far.
