Han Ahmedow

Han Ahmedovich Ahmedov, or Han Ahmedowiç Ahmedow (Russian: Хан Ахмедович Ахмедов; also written as Khan Akhmedovich Akhmedov; 16 June 1936 – 6 December 2006), was a Turkmen politician who has served as the only prime minister of Turkmenistan from December 1989 to May 1992.

During his time in office, Turkmenistan declared independence from the collapsing Soviet Union in October 1991. Afterwards, Ahmedov became Railways Minister (1991–1992) and then ambassador to Turkey (1992–1994).

Later life and death

In September 2002 he was arrested and placed under internal exile in Serdar, where he remained until he died of a heart attack in late 2006. According to relatives of Ahmedov, the government did not allow him to receive medical treatment in Ashgabat.[1]

Biography

Higher education: in 1959, he graduated from the Tashkent Institute of Railway Transport Engineers.

Since 1959, he worked at the Ashgabat station of the Ashgabat Railway: duty engineer, deputy head of the shunting dispatcher, shunting dispatcher.

Since 1962, Deputy station master, station master. Then he worked as Deputy head of the Ashgabat branch, head of the Chardzhou branch of the Central Asian Railway.

Since 1980, Head of the Department of Transport and Communications of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Turkmen SSR.

Since 1985, the first secretary of the Ashgabat City Committee of the CPSU.

Since 1988, First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Turkmen SSR.

Since December 1989, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Turkmen SSR.

Since November 1990, Prime Minister of the Turkmen SSR.

In November 1991, the head of the Turkmen Railway.

Since December 1991, Deputy Head of the Government of Turkmenistan.

Since August 1992, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to Turkey. He held this position until 1994.

People's Deputy of the Turkmen SSR. Member of the Central Control Commission of the CPSU 1990-1991. Member of the CPSU from 1963 to 1991.
