Harmonious (Epcot)
Harmonious is a nighttime spectacular at Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida. The long-term replacement of IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, Harmonious showcases and celebrates the cultures and stories of the world that have inspired various Disney films and music.[2] The show utilizes pyrotechnics, choreographed water fountains, water curtains, lasers, searchlights, and LED screens to present a 360° audio-visual experience on the park's World Showcase Lagoon.[3][4] The primary show equipment is notably housed on a collective of floating barges that are permanently moored at the center of the lagoon.[5] Harmonious is described by Disney as the "one of the largest nighttime spectaculars ever created for a Disney theme park."[6]

Conceptualized by then-chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products and now-CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Chapek, and developed further by Walt Disney Creative Entertainment under the direction of its Vice President of Parades and Spectaculars, Steve Davison, Harmonious is a celebration of the Disney stories and songs that have inspired and empowered the world, emphasizing its ability to unite people from all walks of life.[7] Told through reimagined and reinterpreted classic Disney visuals and music by 240 international artists, the show is divided into three chapters: "Gather", "Celebrate", and "Unite".[2][8]
The show was first announced at the biennial D23 Destination D event in 2018, and confirmed to be initially billed as "HarmonioUS" at the D23 Expo in 2019.[9][10][11][12] Originally set to premiere in 2020 after the limited run of its direct predecessor Epcot Forever, the show (now billed simply as "Harmonious") was delayed to October 1, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and premiered as part of Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary celebration.[13]
Show summary
Act I: Gather
On the banks of the World Showcase Lagoon, the 19 torches from IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth are lit. At the beginning of the show, a call done by a single female vocalizing to the tune of Pinar Toprak's EPCOT Anthem is sent out as the torches are extinguished. Abstract, colorful imagery fills the center screen, as low purple floodlights light up. A female narrator begins speaking:
“All around us, the world is alive with music. Voices calling out in search of one another, we find each other in song.”
Various arias and chants from Disney movies accompany the narration as a rising sun appears on the central screen, withs its glistening rays spilling over to the perimeter screens. The fountains also display orange and yellow water effects.
As the voices crescendoes and stops, the imagery on the perimeter screens changes to show blue swirling patterns. On the central screen, a blue, double-spiraled koru — a symbol of peace, kinship, and belonging in the Māori culture, and was used in the Disney film Moana — appears. The fountains also change colors to purple. As "How Far I'll Go" plays with a new instrumental created for the show (sung in English first and then sung in Mandrin Chinese, Norwegian, German, Arabic, Spanish, Tahitian, Then English again) The imagery changes to a colorful swirling vortex before changing once again to show the sea from underneath. An outrigger boat can be seen sailing on the two of the perimeter screens, while an illuminated manta ray swims in the other two. The blue swirling patterns return to the perimeter screens as the swimming illuminated manta ray image moves to the central screen and swims upward. The image's outline is then transferred to a mist screen above the central screen through lasers.
The music then transitions to "Go the Distance". The central barge's low searchlights are lit in purple and points in the direction of the World Showcase pavilions. The pavilions themselves are lit up in purple front lights. White searchlights on both the barges and on the rooftops of several World Showcase pavilions are lit and point towards the center of the lagoon before the latter disappears. A dancing red ball of light appears on the central screen before exploding to show five golden rays of light. The first set of eight high-launch fireworks shells explodes in the sky, before the perimeter screens take on the same imagery as the central screen's. The fountains turn back on and are lit in white and blue.
As both songs join together for the act's finale, the lagoon becomes a colorful kaleidoscope of fireworks and light. A second set of high-launch fireworks shells explodes above the lagoon, as the perimeter screens show two balls of red and blue light chasing each other. The image then moves to the central screen, where the two balls of light are seen spiraling and combining together to explode in a flash of white. The fountains displays a rainbow color combination. Two fireworks shells are launched as a star field is then revealed on all of the screens. Orange-colored searchlight rays from the barges paint the sky as the music intensifies and reach its climax. As fireworks shoot off from the perimeter barges, the screens shows dusk turning to dawn, repeating the sunrise imagery at the top of the act. A second set of high-launch fireworks shells explodes above the lagoon, which triggers two large white fireworks as well as a third set of high-launch ones. As a refrain of the EPCOT Anthem plays, various comets are then fired upwards toward the central screen which triggers a set of colorful fireworks to go off. The act ends with the image of a spinning compass on the central screen.
Act II: Celebrate
Guests are taken on a musical, globe-trotting journey across many countries and regions through the prism of the Disney movies that take place in each one. The songs that represent each country or region are performed by local artists and partially in their respective mother tongues.
Middle East
A laser image of the Sultan's palace from Aladdin is projected on the mist screens above the central screen. The compass image on the central screen itself dissolves into swirling sand that scatters to the perimeter screens. As strains of "Arabian Nights" play overhead and a brief female vocalization (in the tune of the EPCOT Anthem) is heard, the swirling sands reveal the Genie's lamp on the perimeter screens. The Cave of Wonders can also be seen rising from the sands on the central screen. The music then picks up, as the moving arms on the perimeter screens are raised to form part of the lamp as its "spout" where four pink firework shells are launched. On the central screen, the mouth of the Cave of Wonders opens wide and Islamic geometric patterns can be seen moving past as the image zooms forward. As the vocals of the song kick in, a dancing, stylized Genie (in the style of Islamic calligraphy) appears on the central screen and appears to "summon" the launching fireworks. The screens are then covered in moving geometric patterns before revealing the rooftops of Agrabah at nighttime. A silhouetted Aladdin and Jasmine riding the magic carpet can be seen on one side of the perimeter screens and moves towards the moon on the central screen. Moving, colorful geometric patterns then cover the screens again during a musical interlude. The stylized Genie then appears to "summon" more fireworks on the perimeter screens before moving to the central screen to close the section.
India
Several orange searchlights and lasers flash as chanting and electronic beats plays overhead. The lights and lasers, as well as the fountains, take on a green color as large, spiraling leaves cover the central screen. The music transitions to a Bollywood-inspired take on "I Wan'na Be Like You" from The Jungle Book, as previously seen at Disneyland Paris' "The jungle Book Jive". The spiraling leaf cover on the central screen then parts to reveal a dancing puppet of Baloo, as well as several dancing monkeys on the perimeter screens. The puppets are reminiscent of the ones used in Indian shadow puppet plays. A "cloth screen" descends from above, and a puppet of King Louie appears. Light green rays of light emanate from the central ring as he begins to sing the song, with a close-up of his face on the central screen and his arms extended to the perimeter screens. Several laser images of green leaves appear above the central ring as well. Mowgli periodically appears on the perimeter screens, dancing to the tune. During the chorus, moving and swirling Indian patterns cover the screens as four fireworks shells are launched. The fountains first display orange, then light blue effects. The puppet King Louie then reappears on the central screen, dancing. He was then replaced by a set of dancing human puppets in traditional Indian attire. Two large fireworks shells are launched, in addition to various comets. As the section comes to a close, another "cloth screen" descends on the central screen before the puppet Baloo and Mowgli reappears to dance with each other. A set of colorful fireworks are launched, as the images on the screens disappear in clouds of colorful smoke (similar to the ones used during the Holi festivities).
Act III: Unite
A reprise of Toprak's Epcot Anthem leads into a soaring version of “Someday” from Hunchback. Select artists perform each verse, and a comet flies over the lagoon from the American Gardens Theater. The narrator intones:
“You raise your voice and it’s enough to lift the human spirit. Set the song inside you soaring, and the whole wide world will hear it.”
A laser heart is projected over the central platform, which slowly morphs into a bird; a globe appears on the water curtain and all the screens around it. All the artists join together as fireworks are launched in and around the lagoon. As the song crescendos, it abruptly cuts to three seconds of darkness and silence before climaxing in a bright array of fireworks, voices and light. The narrator bids farewell with:
“Wherever the world leads you next, we hope you carry a song with you, and know that the promise of someday, begins inside of you. Good night.”

Show elements
Harmonious shares similar show equipment with the former IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth show as well as its predecessors, including the usage of pyrotechnics, choreographed water fountains, lasers, searchlights, floating set pieces, and LED screens.[16]
Compass
The show's primary show equipment is housed on a collective of floating barges known as the "compass", named as such due to its positioning on the World Showcase Lagoon.[5][6] Four of these barges holds the arc-shaped and double-sided LED screens that measures 25 feet (7.62 m) high and 88 feet (26.82 m) long. These barges form the perimeter of the barge collective and are positioned in the ordinal directions. Each barge is named after the nearest intersecting World Showcase pavilion: Mexico (pointing northeast), Germany (southeast), Canada (northwest), and France (southwest).[17] The centerpiece platform, positioned at the center of the collective, holds a six-story tall ring structure where a high-density water curtain, moving lights, and several water fountains are installed.[18] In addition, 8 moving arms that measures 54 feet (16.46 m) long are placed either between (for the LED screen barges) or in front and behind (for the central barge) to support more show equipment and are choreographed to move along as the show progresses.
As the collective of barges is too large to store in the backstage marina behind the China and Germany pavilions, they remain permanently moored at the center of the lagoon.[5] At daytime, the perimeter screens are turned on to show the undersea imagery from Act I with the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary logo periodically appearing and disappearing.[19] Initially, the plan was to simply turn on the fountains to add to the ambiance of World Showcase.
