The song is a ballad, sung from the perspective of a woman at the end of a relationship. She tells her former lover, "always, you said, was me and you", and thus wonders whether "always" is over now: "does it never last that long?".

The song was performed thirteenth on the night, following Slovenia's Vili Resnik with "Naj bogovi slišijo" and preceding Portugal's Alma Lusa with "Se eu te pudesse abraçar". At the close of voting, it had received 64 points, placing 9th in a field of 25.

This was the "swan song" for Noel Kelehan, the historic Irish conductor in Eurovision, who accompanied 29 Eurovision songs, among which 24 were Irish entries and 5 went on to win the competition. No other conductor ever participated on more occasions in Eurovision.

It was succeeded as Irish representative at the 1999 contest by The Mullans with "When You Need Me".
