Debuting with the single Protostar on March 4, 2020, the group has earned several accolades, including the Best Asian Artist (Japan) at the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards and the Best 5 New Artists at the 2021 Japan Gold Disc Award. According to the Oricon Charts, JO1 has sold more than 1.8 million physical copies in Japan.
Name
The group's name, JO1, was chosen by Lapone Entertainment among the suggestions given by the public (called 'national producers') through Produce 101 Japan's official website. According to the original suggestion, the "J" in JO1 refers to Japan, the group's origin country, while the "O1" refers to the first year of the Reiwa, the period the group was first introduced.[7] However, "JO1" officially means that "the trainees who have dreamed together at Produce 101 Japan will become one and aim for the top of the world".[8] The name was announced during the final episode of the show.[9]
History
Pre-debut: Formation through Produce 101 Japan
JO1 was formed through the reality competition show Produce 101 Japan from September 25 to December 11, 2019. A total of 6,000 people, who were not tied to any talent agency, auditioned for the show.[10][11] Out of the initial 101 trainees participating in the show, the final 11 were chosen by viewers through online voting and announced via live television broadcast on TBS.[12] There was no plan to limit the period of the group's activity after its debut.[5]
Before appearing on the show, several members had already been active in the entertainment industry. Ren Kawashiri is a former backup dancer, having performed for SMAP, FT Island, Dreams Come True, Tomohisa Yamashita, Lead, Wanna One, and Pentagon.[13] Ruki Shiroiwa is a former member of Johnny & Associates' trainee group, Johnny's Jr.. He was also part of the voice actor music group Tsukicro in 2017, where he sang and portrayed the character Ruki Hibiya.[14] Shosei Ohira is a former member of EXPG Sword, a performance unit specially established by Naoki Kobayashi of Exile and EXPG Kyoto.[15][16]
2020: Debut and The Star
Shortly after the end of Produce 101 Japan, JO1 flew to South Korea to prepare and produce their debut single, Protostar.[note 1][17] The single was released on March 4, 2020, and received an immediate commercial success by peaking at number one on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart with over 300,000 copies sold, making JO1 the seventh artist who has managed to do so with a debut single.[18][19][20][21] Meanwhile, its lead track titled "Infinity" peaked at number one on the Billboard Japan Hot 100.[22] The group had their first live performance on a TV program on the NTV's morning show Sukkiri on March 24.[23]
On August 26, JO1 released their second single, Stargazer,[24][25] with the lead track "Oh-Eh-Oh", produced by Pentagon's Hui.[26] Unlike the previous single, the training and production for the single were conducted remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[27] Stargazer features first participation by members in the production, namely Sho Yonashiro and Ren Kawashiri writing lyrics and making choreography, respectively, for the track "My Friends".[28][29] On September 5, the group performed as a headliner for the first time for the 31st Mynavi Tokyo Girls Collection Autumn/Winter 2020, held in Saitama Super Arena.[30]
JO1 released their first studio album, The Star, on November 25.[31] The album features songs from their two singles and seven new songs.[32] It debuted at second place on the Oricon Albums Chart and the Billboard Japan Hot Albums chart behind BTS' Be.[33][34] On December 2, JO1 made their first appearance at the FNS Music Festival by performing the album's promotional single, "Shine a Light".[35] The group held their first live-streaming concert titled Starlight on December 19 that amassed an estimate of 120,000 viewers from over 30 countries.[36][37] By the end of the year, JO1 was recognized with the Rising Star Award by the MTV Video Music Awards Japan and the Best New Asian Artist by the Mnet Asian Music Awards.[38][39] They also ranked in several domestic year-end charts, including third place on the Oricon Annual New Artist Total Sales Ranking 2020 and eighteenth place on the Billboard Japan 2020 Year-End Artist 100.[40][41] The group was later named as one of Best 5 New Artists by Japan Gold Disc Award along with SixTones, Snow Man, NiziU, and Yoasobi for their net sales in 2020.[42][43]
2021–present: Further releases and Open the Door
In January 2021, JO1 released the digital single "Tsutaerareru Nara" as the theme song for Kit Kat Japan's commercial.[44] In February, JO1 performed in South Korea for the first time by appearing in M Countdown[45] as well as held their second online concert, Starlight Deluxe, where they announced their third single, Challenger.[46] The single was released on April 28 with "Born to be Wild" served as the lead track.[47] It earned first place on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart and eventually charted at eleventh place on the 2021 Mid-Year Singles Sales Chart with over 298,000 copies sold.[48][49]
On August 18, 2021, JO1 released their fourth single, Stranger.[50][51] The single was preceded by the release of B-side tracks "Dreaming Night", which was used as the opening theme song for the TV drama Love Phantom, and "Freedom" as digital singles.[50][52] Both songs charted in Billboard Japan Hot 100, while the lead track "Real" peaked atop the chart.[53][54][55] Continuing the group's consecutive number ones on the chart, Stranger topped the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart with over 280,000 copies sold.[56] The single eventually became the group's fastest single that surpassed 400,000 copies sold according to Billboard Japan in its second week.[57] JO1 then participated in a joint live concert titled KCON World Premiere: The Triangle on September 23, along with other post-Produce 101 Japan groups, OWV and Enjin, at the Pacifico Yokohama.[58] The event was the group's first performance with a live audience since they debuted.[59] On October 9, Lapone Entertainment announced that member Sukai Kinjo, who had missed the concert, would suspend his activities after being diagnosed with adjustment disorder and receive treatment.[58][60]
On November 19–21, JO1 held their first live concert titled 2021 JO1 Live "Open the Door" at the Makuhari Messe instead of a national tour as previously planned to comply with COVID-19 preventive measures.[51][61] Between the five shows, the concert amassed a total of 45,000 audience in attendance.[61] It featured songs from the group's upcoming fifth single, Wandering, set to be released on December 15.[61][62] The single will feature double lead tracks, "Bokura no Kisetsu" (僕らの季節, Our Season) and "Prologue".[62] The latter, used as the ending song for the anime series Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, was produced by UTA and released digitally on October 11.[63][64] Prior to his break, Kinjo managed to participate in the recording of the single except for the song "Oasis".[62]
