Early and personal life
Acosta was born on December 15, 2001 in Quezon City, Philippines. He has a sibling named Lorraine; their father, who was a cop in Manila was murdered on his duty when they were at a young age and their mother Geraldina had to raise them on her own.[6][5][7]
Shortly after his father died, he began to record in a studio from time to time after being inspired by FlipTop Battle League emcees.[5] He transferred schools[6] because they would often move out to another apartment almost every year,[6] and was bullied initially.[8][5][9] In 2016, a fire broke at their neighbor's house in Navotas,[6] forcing them to move out again, this time back to his mother's relatives in Quezon City.[6][5][9]
Career
Career beginnings and The Voice Teens

At age 13, he uploaded his first song on SoundCloud.[10] Struggling financially, he worked as an extra being paid "around 10 dollars a day" at age 15 to help his mom with expenses, while also saving money to go to the studio and for his school allowance.[5][9] He was persuaded to try going to VTR castings, and tested his luck on "every audition opportunity" for films, TV ads and reality shows and was "rejected for atleast one hundred times" prior to landing a role on a Grab commercial, and a few more mostly in cameo, including a film shown on Netflix.[2]
In 2018, Acosta began uploading music again under his birthname Angelo Acosta[3] beginning with a mixtape entitled "Swerte", it garnered 200,000 streams in less than a week but was deleted.[11][12]He was then discovered by "Curve Entertainment", a PARI-certified local label, who manages Ely Buendia[13] and kakie, and signed him to a one-year recording deal after he reached out to their landline & submitted demos.[2]
In 2020, Acosta participated in the blind auditions of the second season of The Voice Teens on his "sixth attempt on making the show" and sang Shanti Dope's hit "Nadarang" and managed to make Bamboo Mañalac and apl.de.ap turn. He picked the latter as his coach.[4] He got eliminated in the Battles after performing "Imposible" by KZ Tandingan with opponent CZ Baylosis, who emerged as the winner.[14] He became the first hip-hop artist to get into a coach's team and reach the Battles across all eight seasons of the local The Voice Philippines franchise.[15]
Influences
On a radio interview, Acosta said that he "grew up listening" to Gloc-9, Bruno Mars, and the Black Eyed Peas.[16][9] Acosta also mentioned Drake, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Post Malone, The Weeknd and late rappers, XXXTentacion, Mac Miller and Juice Wrld as his main musical influences.[9] Other artists Acosta has said inspired his work include Polo G, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, and Rex Orange County.[9]
