Leptobos

Leptobos is an extinct genus of large bovid found in Europe and Asia. It reached a weight up to 320 kg.[1] It is often considered closely related to Bison and the insular Epileptobos. It is known from the Late Pliocene and Early Pleistocene of Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, India (Siwaliks) and China. Leptobos syrticus from Libya likely represents another bovine taxon.[2] The first appearance of Leptobos in Europe around 3.6-3.5 million years ago is considered to define the beginning of the Villafranchian faunal stage in Europe.[3]
