The municipality covers an area of 13.59 square kilometres (5.25 sq mi), and has a population of 419 (as at 3 July 2006).

Mírov lies approximately 22 kilometres (14 mi) south-west of Šumperk, 38 km (24 mi) north-west of Olomouc, and 177 km (110 mi) east of Prague.

The maximum security Mírov Prison is located in an old castle above the village. Famous inmates held there include a controvert ethnic Hungarian politician János Esterházy, and Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic 1944–45 Štefan Tiso. Czech hitman Jiří Kajínek became famous because of his escape from this prison.
