On 20 December 20, 2013, the line was commissioned to Kalyon Group for construction.[3] The groundbreaking ceremony was held on 9 February 2014. The line is 24.5 km (15.2 mi) long with 19 stations.

The line is divided into three parts.[4] It is partly in service. The section between Mecidiyeköy and Mahmutbey was opened on 28 October 2020.[5] The Mecidiyeköy - Kabataş part is still under construction, and there is also a planned Esenyurt - Mahmutbey extension, which is not under construction.

When it's fully completed, The M7-line is will be connecting twelwe districts of Istanbul Province, namely Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, Şişli, Kağıthane, Eyüp, Gaziosmanpaşa, Esenler, Bağcılar, Küçükçekmece, Avcılar, Başakşehir and Esenyurt. It is projected that 300 cars of driverless metro trains will transport about one million riders daily. The total travel time will be 31.5 minutes between the end stations. The line costs 3.7 billion (approx. US$1 billion).[6]

!WARNİNG! During the controls made on April 7, 2021, Mecidiyeköy Station was closed for use as a precautionary measure, as it was estimated that there was a ground problem in the Mecidiyeköy truss area, and the services are currently operating with normal tariff between Mahmutbey - Nurtepe and shuttle tariff between Nurtepe - Çağlayan. Due to the ongoing research on the problematic ground, the system will continue to be operated with this time plan temporarily until a solution is found. Therefore; Mecidiyeköy Station will remain closed until a second announcement is made, and access will be provided by free IETT ring services operating between the "Exit No. 1 (Metrobus Connection and Mecidiyeköy Bus Stops)" of Mecidiyeköy station and "Exit No. 3" of Nurtepe station.
