Professional career

2020: Breakthrough: Grand Slam debut and maiden win, Top 100 debut, First top 10 win

Giron reached the second rounds of a Grand Slam at the 2020 US Open where he won his first Grand Slam main draw match against Marc Polmans in five sets and at the 2020 French Open for the first time in his career.

In November 2020, Giron recorded his first top-ten win against 7th seed Matteo Berrettini at the Paris Masters.[3]

2021: French Open third round, Olympics debut, Top 60 debut

Giron participated in the main draw as a direct entry at the 2021 Australian Open for a second consecutive year but lost in the first round to 6th seed Alexander Zverev in four sets.[4]

In June 2021, Giron reached the third round of a Grand Slam at the 2021 French Open for the first time in his career.[5]

At the 2021 Halle Open, Giron reached his first quarterfinal at an ATP 500 level tournament as a qualifier where he was defeated by Félix Auger-Aliassime.[6] As a result of this good run, he reached a then career-high of No. 65 on 21 June 2021.

Giron made the second round at the Olympics, beating Norbert Gombos[7] before losing to Kei Nishikori in three sets.[8]

In September at the 2021 Sofia Open, Giron reached his fourth quarterfinal of the season (with quarterfinal appearances in Halle, Metz and Winston-Salem) after defeating 3rd seed Alex de Minaur in the second round.[9] He later beat 8th seed John Millman in 70 minutes to move into his first career ATP tour-level semifinal,[10] where he lost to 2nd seed Gaël Monfils.[11] As a result he reached a new career high ranking in the top 60 at World No. 59 on 4 October 2021.
