Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford

Marilyn Sandra Wilson-Rutherford (née Rovell; born February 6, 1947) is an American singer who is best known as the first wife of the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson. Starting her singing career in the early 1960s, Marilyn became part of the Brian-produced girl groups the Honeys and American Spring. She and Brian were married from 1964 to 1979 and together had two children, Carnie and Wendy Wilson, who later joined with Chynna Phillips to form the trio Wilson Phillips.

Biography

Rovell and Wilson met when she attended an August 1962 Beach Boys concert at Pandora's Box, a Sunset Strip nightclub, with her sister Diane and their cousin Ginger Blake, who was dating Brian's then-collaborator Gary Usher.[1] Wilson and Rovell began dating when Wilson was 20 years old and Rovell was 15 years old.

Marilyn, Diane, and Ginger formed a girl group, the Honeys, in 1961; Wilson soon became their producer. Wilson and Rovell married on December 7, 1964, as the Honeys' career was declining.[1] The couple had two daughters, Carnie and Wendy, who later found fame as members of Wilson Phillips.

In 1971, Marilyn and Diane Rovell formed the band Spring (later renamed American Spring), recording a few singles and an album. In 1974, due to Brian's growing seclusion from the outside world after his father Murry's death, Marilyn temporarily stopped her music career.[2] Marilyn and Brian amicably divorced in 1979.[3]

Marilyn and the Honeys reunited for Ecstasy, their 1983 comeback record, and they again reformed in the 1990s, occasionally performing at venues in Southern California. She has remarried and is now known as Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford. She works as a real estate agent in Los Angeles, California.[4]

Marilyn has appeared in numerous documentaries and other programs about the Beach Boys, Wilson Phillips, and the music of the 1960s and 1970s. She was portrayed in The Beach Boys: An American Family, and in the earlier Summer Dreams: The Story of the Beach Boys. In 2012, she also made appearances in her daughters' reality TV series Wilson Phillips: Still Holding On. She was also portrayed in Love and Mercy (2014).
