Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda (born 19 October 1985) is a Mexican lawyer and politician who has served as the 17th and current governor of Baja California since 1 November 2021.[1] A member of the National Regeneration Movement, she has previously served as the mayor of Mexicali and in the Chamber of Deputies representing Baja California's second district.[2]

Education

Avila Olmeda studied law at the Center for Technical and Higher Education in Mexicali and completed her bachelor's degree in 2009. She later earned two master's degrees, one in law at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, and the other in public administration at the Autonomous University of Baja California.

Career

Ávila Olmeda was elected in 2018 as a member of Congress during the LXIV Legislature. She only served in this position for six months before resigning to campaign for president of the Mexicali Municipality. She won the election on 2 June with around 47% of the vote.[3]

In 2021, Avila Olmeda was nominated as the MORENA candidate for governor of Baja California. She ran successfully against candidates Jorge Hank Rhon (PES) and Lupita Jones (PAN) with nearly 50% of the vote.[4] She was sworn in on 1 November 2021. She is the state's first female governor, as well as the youngest person to hold the office, at age 36.[5]

She has been married to former deputy Carlos Torres Torres since 2019. She lives in Mexicali.
