Memoria (2021 film)

Memoria is a 2021 internationally co-produced drama fantasy film written, directed and co-produced by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The film stars Tilda Swinton, Elkin Díaz, Jeanne Balibar, Juan Pablo Urrego and Daniel Giménez Cacho. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 15 July 2021, and will be released in a very limited theatrical release starting 26 December 2021. It was selected as the Colombian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.[4]

Plot

Describing the plot of Memoria in his review, Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian wrote: "Swinton plays Jessica, an expatriate woman from Scotland who lives in Medellín running a market-gardening business selling flowers; she is in Bogotá visiting her sister Karen and [Karen’s] husband, Juan, because Karen is ill in hospital with a mysterious respiratory complaint. One night, Jessica is awoken from a sleep by a strange bang or sonic boom. What is going on?"[5]

Production

In March 2018, it was announced Tilda Swinton had joined the cast of the film, with Apichatpong Weerasethakul directing from a screenplay he wrote.[6] In August 2019, Jeanne Balibar, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Juan Pablo Urrego and Elkin Diaz joined the cast of the film.[7]

Principal photography began in August 2019, in Colombia.[8]

Release

In November 2019, NEON acquired US distribution rights.[9] The film had its world premiere at the 74th Cannes Film Festival on 15 July 2021,[10] and was awarded the Jury Prize. It is scheduled to begin a "never-ending" release in the United States, in which it will screen on one theater screen at a time, week by week, on 26 December 2021, commencing at New York's IFC Center.[11]

Reception

Memoria received critical acclaim. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 92% score from 39 reviews, with an average rating of 8.1/10. The consensus states: "Memoria finds writer-director Apichatpong Weerasethakul branching out into English-language filmmaking without forsaking any of his own lyrical cinematic vocabulary."[12] Metacritic reports a score of 89, based on 17 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[13]
