Michiel Hoogeveen

Michiel Hoogeveen (Leiden, 6 July 1989) is a Dutch political analyst and politician on behalf of JA21. Since 15 April 2021, he is a Member of the European Parliament within the group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).

Early life and education

Hoogeveen holds a Bachelor of Business Administration at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and a Master of Science in political science with a focus on international relations at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Career

Hoogeveen worked for several banks. From 2016 to 2019 he was a consultant at KPMG..[1] He was a member of the Provincial Council of South Holland from March 2019 until April 2021 [2]

Hoogeveen was campaign manager for Forum for Democracy for the 2019 European Parliament elections in the Netherlands and was on the fifth position on the electoral list.[3] After the elections he became the policy assistant of Derk Jan Eppink. Eppink was elected in the Dutch general elections of 17 March 2021. As a result, the vacant seat in the European Parliament came to Hoogeveen.[4]

In the European Parliament, Hoogeveen is vice-chair of the European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and substitute member of the European Parliament Committee on International Trade and European Parliament Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality.[5]

North Korea

Hoogeveen conducted research on North Korea. He wrote his thesis on trade relations between both Koreas and also came into contact with North Koreans. From 2014 he visited North Korea several times. Hoogeveen published a book in 2018 about the rise and future of North Korea and was regularly featured in the media on this subject.[6]

In the European Parliament, Hoogeveen is active in the Parliament's delegation for relations with the United States and the Korean Peninsula.
