Premise
A mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper, and conspiracy theorist, K.C. Houseman, believe her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.

Production
It was announced in May 2019 that Roland Emmerich was writing and directing the film, with a budget set at $140 million, making it one of the most expensive independent films ever.[2] Lionsgate acquired the film's American distribution rights, and AGC International acquired the international distribution rights.[3]
In May 2020, Josh Gad[4] and Halle Berry were cast,[5] with Patrick Wilson and Charlie Plummer added in June.[6] In October, Stanley Tucci, John Bradley, Donald Sutherland and Eme Ikwuakor were added to the cast, with Bradley replacing Gad due to scheduling conflicts.[7] Filming began in Montreal in October 2020,[8] after previously being planned for a spring start.[9][10] Michael Peña, Carolina Bartczak, Maxim Roy and Stephen Bogaert were added in January 2021, with Peña replacing Tucci in his role due to COVID-19 travel restrictions preventing Tucci from travelling to the production.[11]
Release
The film is scheduled to be released on February 4, 2022.[1]
