National Directorate for Migration (Argentina)

The National Directorate for Migration[1] (Spanish: Dirección Nacional de Migraciones; DNM) is a decentralised agency of the Government of Argentina responding to the Ministry of the Interior responsible for the handling the country's migration policies.

It was created in 1949, during the first presidency of Juan Domingo Perón, to expand upon the responsibilities of the previously existing Immigration Directorate. It initially operated under the scope of the Secretariat of Labour.[2]

Its headquarters are located in the Hotel de Inmigrantes complex, in the Retiro district of Buenos Aires. In the early 20th century, the Hotel de Inmigrantes served as the first stop for the millions of migrants coming to Argentina from Europe and Asia. Today, in addition to the DNM, the building houses two museums and a cultural centre.[3]

Structure and organisation

The DNM counts with jursidiction over the entirety of Argentina's territory. In addition to its centralised headquarters, it counts with 31 delegations across the country and 3 additional migration offices, as well as a number of mobile units for express documentation and minor bureaucratic procedures. The delegation are based in the capital cities of each of the 23 provinces of Argentina (with the exception of Santa Fe Province, wherein the DNM delegation is located in Rosario and not in Santa Fe), as well as other major cities such as Comodoro Rivadavia, Bariloche, and Puerto Iguazú.[4]

Chief tasks and responsibilities of the DNM include controlling the entry and departure of non-Argentine citizens in Argentine territory, granting residency permits to immigrants, and regularising the documentation of immigrants in Argentina for the first time. The DNM counts with seven general directorates: Administration, Immigration, Migratory Movement, Systems and Information Technologies, Technical and Legal Affairs, Institutional and Social Affairs, and Migration Information, Analysis and Control.[5]
