Nenagh railway station serves the town of Nenagh and surrounding area in County Tipperary, in the Mid-West Region of Ireland.

The station is located on Martyrs Road, Tyone, Nenagh. It opened on the 5th of October 1863[1] and is on the Limerick-Ballybrophy railway line, located between Birdhill railway station and Cloughjordan railway station. Passengers can connect at Ballybrophy to trains heading northeast to Dublin or southwest to Cork or Tralee.

The buildings consist of a two-storey station house with a platform canopy supported on cast iron columns,[2] a goods shed and a disused cast iron footbridge. The station is unstaffed and has a car park and sheltered bicycle parking.[3]

There is criticism from communities living along the line of the service currently provided. The timetable does not work for workers and students trying to get to Limerick Colbert or Dublin Heuston in time to get to work during office hours or for third level college/university timetables.

Proposed developments

Proposed closure of Ballybrophy-Nenagh-Limerick line

In November 2016 it was announced the line was very likely to close in 2018 as the demand for the service was low and CIE/IE wished to close it to save money.[5] This was subsequently ruled out by Irish Rail (Iarnród Éireann).[6]

Proposed upgrade of Ballybrophy-Nenagh-Limerick line

The North Tipperary Community Rail Partnership have created online petitions to improve the Limerick–Ballybrophy railway line service.[7]

There is a phased continuous welded rail (CWR) track relay project being carried out on the line over the last few years. There is currently ~12 miles of the old jointed track left to be replaced with CWR in the relay project. The majority of the remaining jointed track yet to be relayed is between Cloughjordan and Roscrea stations.

It is hoped as soon as this CWR relay project is completed, the signalling system on the Limerick–Ballybrophy railway line will then be upgraded which will help improve the speed limits imposed on trains travelling on the line.

Proposed Nenagh Transport Hub

The proposal may include the following measures: Provision of a fully integrated transport hub serving rail and bus passengers; relocation of the existing bus stops from Kickham Street to Nenagh Railway Station for all Dublin, Limerick and other local bus services – including those provided by Bus Éireann, private operators and Local Link services; provision of set-down and pick-up areas at Nenagh Railway Station; provision of a taxi rank, if required; provision of bus shelters; parking area for the dropping off and collection of passengers; provision of real time information panels; enhanced linkage to the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists; enhancements to the provision of secure, sheltered cycle parking.[8]

Buses serving the station

Bus Éireann's Monday - Friday route 323 from Newport, Co. Tipperary to Nenagh serves Nenagh railway station once daily each way.

Other bus services serve Nenagh town, but not the train station itself. [9]
