Neslihan Atagül

Neslihan Atagül Doğulu (Istanbul, born 20 August 1992) is a Turkish actress. She is best known for her role in Kara Sevda[2] (2015–2017), one of the most successful Turkish series, sold to more than 110 countries and the only winner of the International Emmy Award in 2017.[3] She is currently known for her role in the serie Sefirin Kızı as Nare Çelebi.

Also noteworthy are her leading roles in the series Fatih Harbiye (2013–2014) on the Show TV channel as Neriman Solmaz and in the films Araf and Senden Bana Kalan. Throughout her acting career, Neslihan has received numerous awards and accolades for her performances, including the Academy Award for "Best Actress" at the Tokyo International Film Festival.[4]

Biography

Neslihan Atagül was born on 20 August 1992 in Istanbul. Her father was a driver and her mother a housewife. Her father is of Circassian and her mother of Belarusian descent.[1][5]

She studied theater at the University of Yeditepe.

Career

Early years

She set out to become an actress when she was only 8 years old. At age 13, she found the number for the Erberk Agency, owned by Neşe Erberk; she got his address and went with his mother to register. A month later, she acted in a commercial in 2005.

A year later, in 2006, she made her acting debut in the film İlk Aşk, for which she won the first prize of her career as "Promising Young Actress". Shortly after, he got his first role in the series Yaprak Dökümü and, in the following years, he participated in other series such as Canım Babam or Hayat Devam Ediyor.

In 2012, she was noted for her starring role in the film Araf, for which she won numerous awards and was praised for her performance by a Japanese director. In addition, she won the Academy Award for "Best Actress" at the prestigious Tokyo International Film Festival.[4]

2013–2014 Fatih Harbiye

In 2013, Neslihan Atagül landed her first leading role in the romance drama series Fatih Harbiye, alongside Kadir Doğulu. The series is an adaptation of the eponymous book by Turkish writer Peyami Safa, published in 1931, where she played Neriman Solmaz, a young orphan of her mother who is engaged to her lifelong boyfriend until she meets Macit Arcaoğlu (Kadir Doğulu).

Fatih Harbiye premiered on 31 August 2013 on the Fox channel (Turkey) and later moved to Show TV. It ran for 2 seasons and ended on 10 December 2014.

2015–2017 Kara Sevda, the launch of her career

In 2015, one of the most important and most beloved roles of her career would arrive, that of Nihan Sezin in the Turkish drama and romance series Kara Sevda. Nihan is an upper class girl who casually meets Kemal (Burak Özçivit), a shy middle class boy and they both fall in love. Their love is impossible due to the difference in classes but they look for a way to be together. However, due to a family secret, Nihan is forced to marry Emir Kozcuoğlu (Kaan Urgancıoğlu), a very powerful but very selfish and ruthless man and leaves Kemal without any explanation. To try to forget her, Kemal decides to leave Istanbul but 5 years later he returns as an important businessman who seeks revenge and who will try to discover the whole truth.

The series has become a milestone in the international history of Turkish series, being the first and only Turkish series to be awarded the most prestigious television awards in the world, the International Emmy Awards for best telenovela in 2017.[6][7] Also the serie received the special jury award at the Seoul International Drama Awards.[8]

Kara Sevda has become the most watched Turkish series in the world,[9] being translated into more than 50 languages and broadcast in more than 110 countries such as Russia, Italy, Germany, Iran, Slovenia, Uruguay, Greece, etc. In its broadcast in the United States, it became the most watched foreign series in the entire history of the country and the record-breaking Turkish series, achieving large audiences that no other Turkish series has achieved.

The series was broadcast by StarTV and had 2 seasons with a total of 74 episodes and, during its broadcast in Turkey, it was one of the most watched series. It premiered on 14 October 2015 and ended on 21 June 2017. Thanks to her performance in this series, Neslihan won 4 awards as an actress and her popularity and recognition as an actress skyrocketed, not only in Turkey but also internationally.

Due to the overwhelming success of Kara Sevda in the world, in the "Tashkent City Park" Wax Museum in Uzbekistan, two figures Nihan and Kemal are exhibited in the part dedicated to Istanbul.[10]

She made her debut on online platforms with the internet television series Dip (2018) with İlkeKaleli

2019–2021 Sefirin Kızı

In 2019, Neslihan Atagül returned to the screens with the series Sefirin Kızı, playing Nare.[11] Sancar (Engin Akyürek) and Nare have been in love since they were children but Nare's father does not agree with their relationship and, to prevent them from being together, makes his daughter disappear and makes Sancar believe that she fled in regret. Years later, both of them they meet again but Sancar is preparing his wedding with another girl.

The series aired on StarTV and had 2 seasons with a total of 52 episodes. It premiered on 16 December 2019 and ended on 11 May 2021, and for her performance in the series, the actress won the award for "Best Actress" at the Izmir Artemis International Film Festival. However, midway through the series, Neslihan announced her withdrawal from the series due to health problems as she suffered from "leaky gut syndrome".[12]

Present

Currently, the actress is immersed in a new professional project, Hadsiz magazine, which will bring impressive photographs, exclusive interviews with great guests.[13]

Personal life

Neslihan started dating her Fatih Harbiye co-star, Kadir Doğulu, in October 2013. On July 2015. They got engaged in November 2015, and were married on July 2016.[14]
