Ohio Valley Mall

Ohio Valley Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Richland Township, Ohio, outside St. Clairsville. It was opened in 1978 and was developed by the Youngstown, Ohio-based Cafaro Company, who continue to own and manage it. The mall's anchor stores are Boscov's, Ulta Beauty, Marshalls, Michaels, Dunham's Sports, Five Below, and Hickory Farms. The mall contains 71 stores and services. There is 1 vacant anchor store that was once Macy's.

History

The Ohio Valley Mall opened in October 1978. Its original anchor stores were Sears, JCPenney, L.S. Good, Kaufmann's, and Montgomery Ward. Also in October 1978, York Steak House, Rite Aid, RadioShack, Waldenbooks, and Ponderosa Steakhouse opened. Bonanza Steakhouse opened on the mall perimeter in 1980. In March 1982, L.S. Good closed and Stone & Thomas opened in the former L.S. Good in the summer of 1982.

Montgomery Ward closed in April 1983 and Kmart opened in the former Montgomery Ward in November 1983. In 1986, Toys "R" Us opened on the other side of Mall Road. Carmike Cinemas opened sometime in the 1980s. Also sometime in the 1980s, Payless Shoesource opened. York Steak House and Rite Aid closed sometime in the 1990s.

In 1996, Stone & Thomas moved to a larger location within the mall. Stone & Thomas was converted to Elder-Beerman in 1998 due to the latter purchasing the former for $38 million. Subsequently, the space previously occupied by Stone & Thomas was converted to Burlington Coat Factory. In 1999, the former York Steak House and the former Rite Aid were renovated to add a new Old Navy store. Subsequently, Old Navy opened in both the former York Steak House and the former Rite Aid.

Garfield's Restaurant & Pub also opened in 1999. In 2000, Ponderosa Steakhouse closed. Cracker Barrel opened on the other side of Mall Road in March 2001. Sometime in the 2000s, Burlington Coat Factory closed and Steve & Barry's opened in the former Burlington Coat Factory. Kaufmann's became Macy's in 2006 due to the latter acquiring the former.

In 2007, JCPenney moved to Triadelphia, West Virginia.[2] Steve & Barry's closed in late 2008 due to bankruptcy, while Levin Furniture opened in the former JCPenney in 2009. In the summer of 2009, Bonanza Steakhouse closed. Crafts 2000 opened in the former Steve & Barry's in 2010.[3] A year prior, in 2009, Old Navy moved to Triadelphia, West Virginia, and Waldenbooks closed in 2010 due to bankruptcy.[3]

H. H. Gregg opened on the mall perimeter in 2011. In 2012, the Cafaro Company announced plans to renovate the mall's interior and add a new anchor store.[3] The Ohio Valley Mall is home to one of two last remaining Sam Goody stores in the country.[4] Levin Furniture closed in February 2013.[3] Also in February 2013, it was confirmed that Boscov's would open in the former Levin Furniture.[5]

MC Sports opened in the former Old Navy in August 2013.[6] In October 2013, Boscov's opened in the former Levin Furniture.[7] Crafts 2000 closed sometime in the 2010s and Pat Catan's opened in the former Crafts 2000. In September 2015, Ulta Beauty opened in the space across from MC Sports. Kmart and Elder-Beerman closed in March 2017.

Also in March 2017, Carmike Cinemas became AMC Theatres due to the latter acquiring the former. MC Sports closed in April 2017 due to bankruptcy. Sometime between April and May 2017, the former Elder-Beerman was subdivided into four portions. Marshalls opened in a portion of the former Elder-Beerman in September 2017. Sometime in 2017, RadioShack and H. H. Gregg closed due to bankruptcy, while the former MC Sports was used for Spirit Halloween.

Levin Furniture and Mattress opened in the former H. H. Gregg in October 2017. In April 2018, Tilt Studio, a 25,000 square foot arcade with 100+ arcade and video games, 2-level laser tag, mini bowling, Himalaya Ride, black light golf, J.P. Pepperoni Snack Bar, and party rooms, opened in another portion of the former Elder-Beerman. The two remaining portions of the former Elder-Beerman are currently vacant. Toys "R" Us closed on June 30, 2018, due to bankruptcy. In 2018, the former Toys "R" Us was used for Spirit Halloween.

The former MC Sports was subdivided into two portions sometime between December 2018 and January 2019. In March 2019, it was announced that Chick-fil-A would open on the mall perimeter by late 2019, while half of the former Kmart was demolished, and the majority of the other half of the former Kmart was renovated to add a new Dunham's Sports store and a new Five Below store, along with the construction of a new 4-story, 113-room Hampton by Hilton hotel in the space next to Dunham's Sports. The remaining portion of the former Kmart is currently vacant. The former Ponderosa Steakhouse was walled off in March 2019 to advertise for Hampton by Hilton. In April 2019, a VA clinic opened in a portion of the former MC Sports.

The other portion of the former MC Sports is currently vacant. It was announced on April 24, 2019, that Sears would be closing on July 7, 2019. In June 2019, Pat Catan's closed due to Michaels purchasing Pat Catan's in 2016 for $150 million, and subsequent announcement of Michaels closing or converting the remaining Pat Catan's stores into Michaels. Payless Shoesource closed in June 2019 due to bankruptcy. On June 10, 2019, Oil and Gas Safety Supply opened in the former Toys "R" Us.

Michaels opened in the former Pat Catan's on August 25, 2019. On November 1, 2019, Dunham's Sports opened in a portion of the former Kmart. It was announced on January 6, 2020, that Macy's would be closing as part of a plan to close 125 stores nationwide. In March 2020, Macy's closed.[8] Levin Furniture and Mattress closed in March 2020 due to bankruptcy, while Chick-fil-A opened on the mall perimeter.

In June 2020, Five Below opened in another portion of the former Kmart. Ferguson's House of Furniture opened in the former Levin Furniture and Mattress in October 2020. From February to May 2021, the former Sears was used for COVID-19 vaccinations. Hampton by Hilton opened in the space next to Dunham's Sports on April 14, 2021. In August 2021, it was announced that Garfield's Restaurant & Pub had closed and that Coaches Burger Bar would open in its place.

The former Sears was used for Spirit Halloween in 2019, 2020, and 2021. On November 18, 2021, Hickory Farms opened in the former Sears. Renovation of the former Garfield's Restaurant & Pub began in December 2021.
