Once Upon a One More Time

Once Upon a One More Time is a jukebox musical comedy directed by Keone & Mari Madrid with a book by Jon Hartmere. It is based on the stories of fairy-tale princesses and features songs by Britney Spears.[1]

The musical was scheduled to premiere at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago on April 14, 2020 and run through May 17 then begin Broadway previews at the Marquis Theatre on June 26, 2020, with an official opening set for July 30.[2]

On March 12, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker announced a ban on all gatherings of 1,000 or more through May 1, 2020 in response to the coronavirus outbreak.[3] As a result, producers canceled the Chicago engagement.[4]

Synopsis

Famous fairy-tale princesses, including Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty, are gathering together for their book club when Cinderella makes a desperate wish for a new story to read. A fairy godmother grants her wish and gives them a new book, The Feminine Mystique, which opens their eyes to new things in life.[5]

Chicago (2020)

Once Upon a One More Time was first scheduled to premiere October 29, 2019, but moved to early 2020.[6][7] Before cancellation of the Chicago engagement, producers announced casting of Briga Heelan as Cinderella and Justin Guarini as Prince Charming with choreography by Keone and Mari Madrid.[8]

In an interview on the podcast Turning Cole Into Diamonds, actor Kevin Trinio Perdido confirmed that the production is still on and they're heading for a Broadway debut in 2022 without Chicago previews.[9]

Washington DC (2021)

After the cancellation of the Chicago tryout, and the announcement of Broadway reopenings, the show was announced to have a tryout in Washington DC's Shakespeare Theatre Company at the Sidney Harman Hall. It was originally planned to run from November 30, 2021 to January 3, 2022. [10] But it was extended to January 9 due to ticket demands where artistic director Simon Godwin says it’s on track to become the top-selling show in the company’s 35-year history. [11]

Film adaptation

On April 23, 2019, Sony Pictures acquired the film adaptation of Once Upon a One More Time with Spears producing with Larry Rudolph and John Davis through his company Davis Entertainment.[12]
