Pallab Bhattacharyya

Pallab Bhattacharyya (Assamese: পল্লৱ ভট্টাচাৰ্য) is a 1986 batch IPS (39RR)[1] officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre.[2] Mr. Bhattacharya retired in January 2019.

Before his retirement, he served as Director General of Assam Police's Civil Defence & Home Guards, and Special Director General of Special Branch.[3]

After retirement from Police service, he also served as the chairman of the Assam Public Service Commission.[4][5][6][7]

Early life and education

Pallab Bhattacharyya passed his HSLC examination with 9th position. He bagged 2nd position in the Pre-University examination.

Bhattacharyya was a student of Physics in his Bachelor's & Master's degrees. After completing his graduation from Cotton College with first class, he also completed his post graduation from the University of Delhi with first class.[8]

Before joining Indian Police Service in 1986, Mr. Bhattacharyya worked as a lecturer of Physics at Bajali College for the period of 1982 to 1985.

Police career

Before being promoted as the Inspector General of Assam Police, Mr. Bhattacharyya served as SP (Superintendent of Police) in various locations.

• Pallab Bhattacharyya served as Inspector General & Assistant Director General of SOU (Special Operation Unit) of Assam Police until 2013.

• Mr. Bhattacharyya was promoted as the Chief of Assam state Police's Special Branch's Chief in 2013.[8]

• Mr. Bhattacharyya was promoted as the Special Director General of Special Branch along with Director General of Civil Defence & Home Guard in 2018.[8]

Insurgency Management

Under the tenure of Pallab Bhattacharyya, as the Aditional Director-General of SOU (Special Operational Unit) of Assam Police, several major insurgency outfits laid down arms and came for lateral-talk with the Government of India.[9] Apart from these, several international terrorists were arrested and terrorism activities were prevented under his tenure.[10][11]

Bhattacharyya's prime achievement as the Chief of state intelligence was to bring dreaded ULFA leaders for lateral-talk with the Union of India, most of them were departed from Bangladesh in his tenure.[5][12]
