Creative and political activities

Petro Yakovenko's creative nature was manifested in curiosity, observation and the ability to think analytically in a wide range of topics covered. He supports his opinion with emotions that leave no one indifferent. His scientific publications are devoted to the history of Ukraine in the Cossack era [2]dramatical period in early XX century including foundation of UNR, activity of the Tsentralna Rada, signing of the Act zluky,[3] a strange figure of the anarchist Nestor Makhno and other. [4] Petro Yakovenko was a reviewer of the first and third Ukrainian editions of the book Ukraine: A History, a real sensation of Ukrainian scientist from Canada Orest Subtelny, who refuted outdated Soviet claims and defended a true view of history. [5]

However, the publicist was more concerned with the problems of modernity, and among them those that arose under the pressure of totalitarianism and inhibited the free expression of self-consciousness of more than one generation. «For a long time in history we had limited contacts with foreign countries, with representatives of art. There were numerous bans, public condemnation of those who disobeyed them… Rock music fell into disgrace. Naturally, the opposition was born… There was a hidden struggle for the right to listen to "theirself" music» [6]In the fascination of young people with forbidden music P. Yakovenko showed the phenomenon counterculture and comparing it with the low-quality music products supplied by mass culture. This far from entertaining view was felt by the authorities as a threat to their dominance. P. Yakovenko's articles also supported underground art, representatives of contemporary art with their experiments.[7]
The journalist and culturologist delved into political processes. In the late 1990 and early 2000s, he worked with prominent Ukrainian politicians and economists. P. Yakovenko's political views were close to NRU which became apparent when he met Vyacheslav Chornovil. At his request Yakovenko wrote political articles in the newspaper Chas-Time (Chas) NRU).[8] They aimed to assert Ukraine's independence and debunked the Kremlin's propaganda myths.
During 1992 – 1994 P. Yakovenko was a political adviser of the representation in Ukraine of the F. & nbsp; Seidel Foundation (Germany). A club of Ukrainian and German politicians was established to discuss pressing political and economic issues in an informal setting.
He was an adviser and consultant to the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Lanovyi. On 1994 Ukrainian presidential election P. Yakovenko supported independent candidate V. Lanovy who took 4th place in the first round. Together with him were founded the Club of Political Experts with the participation of the F. & nbsp; Ebert Foundation (Germany). Leading well-known politicians, businessmen and financiers were invited to discuss. Based on the materials of these discussions digests of the Club's works were published.[9]
Participated in the development of the Pension Reform Program in Ukraine. In 1999 he conducted a seminar on pension reform at the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) (Kyiv office).
