Power (Little Mix song)

"Power" is a song by British girl group Little Mix from their fourth studio album Glory Days (2016). The official remix of the song was released as the fourth and final single[2] and features additional vocals from British rapper Stormzy.[3][4] The remix was included on its reissue, Glory Days: The Platinum Edition, and lyrically focuses on female empowerment and it's equality.[5] Power charted at number six in the United Kingdom, becoming the group's eleventh top ten single there. It charted in a further several other countries and has been certified double platinum in the United Kingdom and Brazil. The song was later featured as one of the theme songs for WWE's Royal Rumble 2018 event.[6] and features as the lip-synch song on episode 5 of the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK, which featured Little Mix Member Jade Thirlwall as the guest judge.[7]

Chart performance

On May 26 2017 "Power" debuted at number twenty seven on the UK Singles Chart becoming the group's seventh top forty hit in the United Kingdom.[8] It later reached a new peak of number six, becoming the group's eleventh top ten single there.[9] In 2017 the song was ranked as the ninth biggest summer song of the year.[10]

The single reached number 2 in Scotland and number 7 in New Zealand.[11][12] It would then go on to peak inside the top twenty in Ireland and Belgium[13] [14] and crack the Top 40 in the Philippines and Latvia.[15] It also charted in Romania.

Music video

The music video was released on 9 June 2017, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, and filmed in Los Angeles in April 2017. It features each member of Little Mix as the leader of their own faction of women, in which Jesy Nelson leads a group of leather-clad bikers, Leigh-Anne Pinnock leads a fashion-forward street crew, Perrie Edwards leads a group of hippies, and Jade Thirlwall leads a troupe of drag queens. In the end, each faction comes together in a show of feminine power reminiscent of the Women's March. [16] The video features a cameo from famous drag queens Courtney Act, Alaska Thunderfuck and Willam, also known as The AAA Girls.[17] It also features Little Mix's mothers, who appear at the end of the video to march with them.[18] Stormzy's scenes, which were filmed separately from the rest of the video, feature him in a barbershop having his hair cut.[19]

Critical reception

The track was generally well received, with TimeOut magazine calling the song "brilliant", despite being "OTT" (over the top),[1] but some fans did criticize the decision to feature a male rapper on a song about female empowerment.[20]

As for awards, the track received an award for "Best Song" at the first ever Global Awards in 2018,[21] and for "Pop Song of the Year" at the 2017 Beano Awards.[22]
