Renal diet

A renal diet is a diet that restricts sodium, phosphorus and potassium.[1] In people with kidney disease, potassium intake is important to be aware of, as too high or too low potassium can cause many health problems.[2] The diet is recommended for people with late stages of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. Potassium plays a vital role in the body, such as allowing the heart and muscles to work optimally. The diet attempts to reduce the build up of electrolytes in the blood in order to prevent arrhythmias, bone disorders, fluid overload, vascular calcification and hypertension.[3]

The renal diet is restrictive. Foods such as potatoes, oranges, avocados, tomatoes, bananas, dairy products and processed meats should be limited and/or avoided. [4]
