Internet phenomenon

The meme started as a nightcore remix of the song, which later became a popular internet phenomenon and meme.

Nightcore

The meme started as a nightcore remix of the song. The original song is in E minor while the nightcore version is in G minor, having been sped up by 1.25x with the pitch also increased. The first known occurrence of the nightcore version was an osu! map that was published on the 24th of July, 2011.[7] Subsequently, a play of the map was published on the 24th of September, 2011.[8] Two days after, on the 26th, a video with the static background and the nightcore version was posted to YouTube, gaining a significant amount of views, sitting at around 71 million as of November of 2021.[9]

The trend

In 2015, the song became popular after a video of two individuals playing a Nightcore version of the song using the rhythm game osu![10] following them, dancing to the song became popular on social media. Their dance moves also became popular, spreading to apps and sites such as TikTok and YouTube in 2018.
