Sam Tanner

Sam Tanner (born 24 August 2000) is a New Zealand athlete.

A former surfer, he set a national indoor 1500m record of 3:34.74 in February 2020 to secure the automatic Olympic qualification mark at Staten Island, New York, beating two-time Olympic medalist and former Commonwealth Games champion Nick Willis in the process.[1][2] He was confirmed on the New Zealand team for the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics in April 2021. He is also best mates with Hayden Wilde and a group of young North and South Island champions in the middle distance community; James McLeay, Angus Sevier, Liam O’Donnell, Daniel Prescott, Jude Deaker and Ian Pugh[3]

Tanner is Māori; his iwi affiliation is Ngāpuhi.[4]
