Sasha Allen (The Voice 21)

Sasha Allen is a singer and artist who reached the semifinals of the The Voice 2021. He is from Newtown, Connecticut.[2]

Career

Allen picked up the guitar when he was six years old.[3] He wrote songs throughout high school.[4] Together with his father Jim Allen, a music teacher, he began playing at local venues and open mics. He dropped out of school in January 2021 to pursue a music career.[5] Allen is also an artist and sells his drawings.[2]

The Voice

Sasha and Jim Allen competed as a duo on the 2021 season of the singing competition show The Voice, starting with their blind audition aired on 21 September 2021. They were eliminated from the show in the semifinals on 7 December, in the top 8. The Voice assigns contestants a coach, and Sasha and Jim Allen's coach was Ariana Grande.[6]

Personal life

Allen was, in his own words, "born female"[7] and came out as transgender in high school,[8] to which many of his teachers and classmates reacted negatively.[4] He is the first openly transgender contestant to make it past the battle rounds of The Voice, and only the third such contestant at all.[5]
