ScotRail Trains

ScotRail Trains Ltd is a future Scottish train operating company owned by Scottish Rail Holdings. It is set to commence operations of the day-to-day services of the ScotRail franchise on 1 April 2022 as an operator of last resort. As Scottish Rail Holdings is owned by Scottish Ministers, the ScotRail service will be directly accountable to the Scottish Government.

History

In December 2019, Transport Scotland announced Abellio ScotRail had not met the performance criteria necessary to have its seven year franchise extended for a further three years and the franchise would conclude on 31 March 2022.[1][2][3]

Future

In March 2021, Transport Scotland announced that the franchise would not be re-tendered for another private sector operator to run, but would be operated by through an operator of last resort.[4][5][6]

In May 2021, the UK Government published The Williams-Shapps Plan for Rail, which will see the planned establishment of Great British Railways. The Williams-Shapps plan proposes that GBR would have national "sub-identities" and "regional variants" of the GBR brand, but it remains unclear whether this would mean the ScotRail brand is retained.[7]

ScotRail Trains will take over all of the services operated by Abellio ScotRail in April 2022.

Rolling stock

When the company commences operations in April 2022 it will inherit all of its predecessor's rolling stock.
