Shababnikim (Hebrew: שבאבניקים) is an Israeli comedy television series that aired on HOT in 2017. The show includes 12 30-minute episodes on lives of four Haredi Jewish men.[1] In January 2021, the first season began streaming internationally with English subtitles under the title The New Black.[2]
In Hebrew, a "shababnik" is a term for a young Haredi person who leaves his or her faith in some regards but not in others. Shababnikim don't leave the religious community, but bend the boundaries of what is acceptable behavior in Jewish law.[3]
According to the creator, a second season is in production, but has not yet been picked up by international broadcasters.[1]
Awards
The show was nominated for awards in eight categories by the Israeli Television Academy, winning four, including Best Comedy, Best Comedy Script, and Best Comedy Actor.[4][5]
