Career
Early career
Tsuboi entered formula racing in 2012 and drove for two years in Formula Challenge Japan. In 2013 he finished the season with fifth place and his best result in this series.[1]
In 2015, he joined the F4 Japanese Championship with the TOM'S team and won the title.[1]
In 2016 he entered the Japanese Formula 3 Championship with TOM'S and drove a Dallara F314 with which he finished third at the end of the season. The following year he improved with a Dallara F317 to second place in the championship and in 2018 he convincingly won the title with 17 victories in 19 races.[1]
In 2016, Tsuboi started at the Macau Grand Prix FIA Formula 3 World Cup. In the race on 18 November 2018, he and German racing driver Sophia Flörsch were involved in a serious accident and got injured.[2]
Super GT & Super Formula
Tsuboi drove in the GT300 class of the Japanese Super GT Championship in 2017 and 2018. There he was able to place in 2017 with a Lexus RC F GT3 in third place. In the following year he reached seventh place with a Toyota 86 MC.[1] He entered the GT500 class in 2018 for Lexus Team SARD in a race with a Lexus LC500 and finished second.[3]
In 2019, Tsuboi made his Super Formula debut with the JMS P.mu/cerumo・INGING team and made the definitive move to the GT500 class in the Super GT in a Lexus LC 500. In the former, he achieved his first podium finish in the fourth race at Fuji Speedway and finished eleventh in the standings with a total of 12 points. In the Super GT, he shared the car with Yuji Kunimoto, with whom he took a podium finish at the Chang International Circuit. With 27.5 points, the duo finished eleventh in the final standings.
In 2020, Tsuboi remained in Super Formula with Cerumo, but switched to a Toyota GR Supra GT500 in Super GT with Cerumo-run ROOKIE Racing. In the Super Formula he was the only driver to record two victories that year: on both the Okayama International Circuit and the Fuji Speedway he was the first to cross the finish line. In the rest of the year, however, he had a number of retirements, eventually finishing third in the championship behind Naoki Yamamoto and Ryō Hirakawa with 50 points. In the Super GT, he shared the car with Kazuya Oshima and achieved three podium finishes, all at Fuji. With 47 points, they finished seventh in the final standings.
In 2021, Tsuboi stayed with Cerumo in Super Formula, and in Super GT in a Toyota GR Supra GT500 with Team au TOM'S, as teammate to Yuhi Sekiguchi. They won the championship with a win in the final race at Fuji Speedway, taking advantage of Naoki Yamamoto's incident with Ren Sato's GT300 ARTA.[4] Meanwhile in Super Formula, Tsuboi only managed to get 6 points overall.[5]
