Shorter College (Arkansas)

Shorter College is a private historically black junior college in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It was founded in 1886 as Bethel Institute by the African Methodist Episcopal Church and offered bachelor's degrees until 1955. It is accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools.[1]

Notable alumni

  • Daisy Bates (1914-1999), civil rights activist, newspaper publisher, and mentor of the Little Rock Nine[1]
  • Scipio Africanus Jones (1863-1943), educator, defense attorney for the Elaine Twelve in Arkansas, and politician[1]
  • Robert Stanton (1902- ?), dentist and state politician, one of the first two African Americans elected to the Indiana lower house in the 20th century; both men were elected as Democratic Party candidates in 1932 and 1934; Stanton helped organize African-American support for the Democratic Party in Lake County, Indiana[2]
