Sprotbrough

Sprotbrough is a village on the western edge of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. Together with Cusworth to the north, it forms the civil parish of Sprotbrough and Cusworth.

It had a population of 3,321 at the 2011 census, although this figure only includes the westernmost part of the village; the more easterly part forms part of the Doncaster built-up area. The larger parish of Sprotbrough and Cusworth had a population of 12,134, whilst the electoral ward of Sprotbrough, including numerous rural villages to the north and west, had a population of 11,143.

An affluent area, its population is mostly white, Christian, middle-class.[1] It is represented by two Conservative councillors on Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. The local member of parliament is Ed Miliband of the Labour Party.

History

The place name 'Sprotbrough' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Sproteburg. The name is thought to mean 'Sprot's borough'.[2]

Much of the local land was owned by the Fitzwilliam family until the 15th century, when the Copley family emerged as major landowners.[3]

Sprotbrough Village harbours the Grade I listed St Mary's Church and The Old Rectory – the childhood home of Second World War flying ace Douglas Bader.

Geography

The area commonly known as Lower Sprotbrough is located east of the A1(M) motorway, closer to Doncaster, while Sprotbrough Village lies to the west.

Sprotbrough Road connects the village to the A19 and A638 roads to the east for Doncaster. Melton Road goes to High Melton to the west. Spring Lane goes to Cusworth to the north, while Boat Lane provides access to Warmsworth and the Don Gorge to the south. There is also a lane to the rural village of Cadeby.

There are three schools, Orchard Infant School, Copley Junior School, and Richmond Hill Primary School. The local secondary school is Ridgewood School in Scawsby.

The Don Gorge is the valley of the River Don as it flows to the south.
