Super-app

A super-app (also written as super app or superapp) is a mobile application that provides multiple services including payment and financial transaction processing, effectively becoming an all-encompassing self-contained commerce and communication online platform that embraces many aspects of personal and commercial life. Examples include Tencent's WeChat and Ant Group's Alipay in China and Paytm in India.[1][2]

Facebook is widely reported as developing a super-app capability.[3][4]

Tata Group is developing a super app named TataNeu.[5][6]

Many super apps are set to hit the Indian market within 2022 and 2023. Major corporations and conglomerate like TATA,[7] Paytm, PhonePe & ITC Maars[8] have Super Apps currently in development.[9]

Pushback by Chinese government

In September 2021, the Chinese government stated its intent to force the lending functions of the Alipay super-app to be split off into their own application and separate back-end businesses.[10][11]
