Taisir Al-Jassim

Taisir Jaber Al-Jassam (Arabic: تيسير جابر الجاسم, born 25 July 1984) is a Saudi Arabian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder. Al-Jassim was the former captain of Al-Ahli and the vice-captain of the Saudi Arabian national team. He retired from the Saudi Arabian national team in 2018.

Since his debut in 2006, Taiseer has been a regular on the squads of both his club team and the national team.

Club career

Al-Ahli

Taisir Al-Jassim started his career at Hajer before joining Al-Ahli on 19 June 2001.[2] His older brother Misfer Al-Jassim also joined Al-Ahli from Hajer before Taisir's signing. He made his debut for Al-Ahli on 18 October 2002 in the Federation Cup final against Al-Ettifaq.[3] He made his league debut on 31 October 2002 in the 4–0 win against Al-Ettifaq.[4] On 26 February 2005, Al-Jassim scored his first goal for Al-Ahli in the 3–2 derby loss against Al-Ittihad.[5] On 8 March 2005, Al-Jassim made his continental debut and scored once for Al-Ahli in the 2005 AFC Champions League against Iraqi side Al-Zawraa.[6] On 6 October 2005, Al-Jassim appeared in his second Federation Cup final for Al-Ahli in the 2–0 loss against Al-Hilal.[7] On 27 December 2005, Al-Jassim scored his first hattrick for Al-Ahli against Abha in the Round of 16 of the 2005–06 Saudi Crown Prince Cup.[8] On 7 April 2006, he started the 2006 Saudi Crown Prince Cup Final which ended in a 1–0 defeat against Al-Hilal.[9] On 9 February 2007, Al-Jassim appeared in his third Federation Cup in the 3–0 win Al-Ittihad.[10] Two months later on 27 April 2007, Al-Jassim started and scored in the 2007 Saudi Crown Prince Cup Final against Al-Ittihad to help Al-Ahli win their fifth title.[11] On 8 May 2007, Al-Jassim was loaned out to Qatari side Al-Gharafa and appeared twice and scored once in the Emir Cup, as Al-Gharafa were eliminated in the semi-finals.[12]

On 3 December 2008, Al-Jassim appeared in his sixth cup final for Al-Ahli but this time in the Gulf Club Champions Cup against Saudi side Al-Nassr. Al-Ahli defeated Al-Nassr 3–0 on aggregate to win their third title.[13] On 8 May 2009, Al-Jassim joined Qatar SC on loan to participate in the Emir Cup, he made two appearances and scored once as his team were eliminated in the semi-finals once again.[14] On 9 October 2009, Al-Jassim signed a new four-year contract with Al-Ahli.[15] On 24 June 2011, Al-Jassim helped Al-Ahli win their eleventh King Cup title after defeating Al-Ittihad 4–2 on penalties.[16] During the 2011–12 and 2012–13 season, Al-Jassim played an instrumental role in leading Al-Ahli to the 2012 AFC Champions League Final and also finishing as runners-up in the 2011–12 Saudi Professional League. He also started the 2012 King Cup Final win against Al-Nassr.[17] Following the departure of Mohammad Massad in January 2013, Al-Jassim was named as club captain. On 6 December 2013, Al-Jassim renewed his contract with Al-Ahli for another four years.[18] On 13 February 2015, Al-Jassim captained Al-Ahli in the 2–1 win against Al-Hilal in the 2015 Saudi Crown Prince Cup Final.[19] During the 2015–16 season, Al-Jassim captained Al-Ahli to their first league title since the 1983–84 season.[20]

Loan to Al-Wehda

On 19 August 2018, Al-Jassim was loaned to fellow Pro League Al-Wehda until the end of the 2018–19 season.[21] His loan was ended early on 26 January 2019 and Al-Jassim returned to Al-Ahli.[22]

Al-Nasr

On 4 September 2019, Al-Jassim joined Kuwait Premier League side Al-Nasr.[23] He became the first Saudi player since Jamal Farhan to play in the Kuwait Premier League. On 2 July 2020, Al-Nasr ended Al-Jassim's early due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Kuwait.[24]

International career

2007 AFC Asian Cup

He participated with the Saudi team in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup as a key player in the feet and the level of the tournament, where he scored two goals against the Bahrain national football team. He was in the youth team in the tournament, which reached the final before the Iraq national football team and was one of four players with Malek Mouath, Yasser Al-Qahtani and Abdulrahman Al-Qahtani.

2009 Gulf Cup of Nations

He also participated in the 2009 Gulf Cup of Nations for the Saudi Arabia national football team, who reached the final against the Oman national football team. However, Al-Jassam's shot was wide of the post in the penalty shoot-out, the match ending 0–0, ultimately giving Oman the trophy by winning the penalties 6–5.

2011 AFC Asian Cup

Al-Jassim scored a goal against the Syria national football team in the 2011 Asian Cup, with Saudi Arabia losing 1–2. Saudi Arabia did not collect any points, so went out in the group stage.[25]

2015 AFC Asian Cup

Al-Jassim scored to Iraq and his Saudi Arabia National Team won 2–1, and he helped them qualify for the Asian Cup in 2015.

2018 World Cup

On 19 December 2017, he announced his intentions to retire after the end of the 2018 World Cup.[26] In May 2018 he was named in Saudi Arabia’s preliminary squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.[27] He made 2 appearances in the World Cup before his tournament ended prematurely due to injury.

Style of play

Taiseer has been described as intelligent, visionary, technically gifted, with excellent work ethics. His strengths are: shooting, especially long-range shooting, dribbling, and passing. He plays in almost all positions in the midfield but most notably as an attacking midfielder, winger, and as a central midfielder.

Personal life

Taisir's older brother Misfer was also a footballer who played for Hajer and Al-Ahli.[28] Taisir is married to a Lebanese woman.[29] He is a practising Shia Muslim, he reads Quran before training and games and built a mosque for Shia in his hometown.
