Till Earth Outwears

Till Earth Outwears is a song cycle for tenor and piano. The songs were composed individually by Gerald Finzi between 1927 and 1956, and collected and published posthumously for high voice as Op. 19a. It consists of seven settings of texts by Thomas Hardy.[1]

A typical performance lasts about 26 minutes. The songs are:[2]

  1. "Let me enjoy the earth"
  2. "In years defaced"
  3. "The Market-Girl
  4. "I look into my glass"
  5. "It never looks like summer here"
  6. "At a lunar eclipse"
  7. "Life laughs onward"

The title of the cycle is taken from the last lines of "In years defaced".
