World Chess Championship 2023

The World Chess Championship 2023 will be a chess match for the World Chess Championship. The match will be between the winner of the World Chess Championship 2021, Magnus Carlsen; and a challenger, who will be the winner of the 2022 Candidates Tournament.[1]

In June 2021, while announcing the FIDE Grand Prix 2022, FIDE gave its preferred match date as "at the end of 2022 or beginning of 2023".[2] On the 8th of December 2021, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich announced that the Candidates was planned to be held in the summer of 2022, probably in Spain, with the World Championship to follow in early 2023.[3]

Shortly following his victory over Ian Nepomniachtchi in the 2021 championship, Carlsen raised speculation that he might not compete in the 2023 edition unless Alireza Firouzja, the prodigy and current second-ranked player in the world, qualified from the Candidates.[4]

The challenger will qualify by winning the Candidates Tournament 2022, which will be an eight-player double round-robin. Six of the eight qualifiers are currently determined:

Notes
  1. Radjabov had qualified for the previous Candidates Tournament, but withdrew after his request to postpone the tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic was refused. With the postponement of the 2020 Candidates Tournament at the halfway point due to the pandemic until its resumption in 2021, Radjabov called for his reinstatement into the tournament. FIDE decided that it was appropriate to instead give Radjabov a direct entry into the 2022 Candidates.
