Zamalek SC (volleyball)

Zamalek Volleyball Club (Arabic: نادى الزمالك للكرة الطائرة‎) commonly known as Zamalek V.C, is an Egyptian volleyball club based in Cairo. The club is the volleyball department of Zamalek SC, and was founded in 1952. It plays in the Egyptian Volleyball League.

In the 1962-63 season,[1] Zamalek participated in the CEV Champions League.[2]

History

Zamalek is one of the most prominent reasons for the spread of the sport of volleyball in Egypt, where Dr. Mahmoud Al-Farnawani, who is an academy graduate of Zamalek, had a great impact, as he began to train a large number of players and teach them the basics of volleyball in order to become professional players, Zamalek was the first Egyptian team to participate in the Volleyball Club World Cup FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship held in Qatar Doha as the 2009 FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship as African League champion and to be the only Egyptian team to win a match in the Club World Cup so far when it won the 2009 edition over Plataneros de Corozal, Puerto Rican with a score of 3-2, the result of the sets was 25-13 and 25-14 & 21-19. With this victory, Zamalek became the first Egyptian team to participate in this tournament, and it became the first and only Egyptian team so far to achieve A victory in a FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship. And the second participation of Zamalek in the 2012 FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship, which was also held in Qatar, and this was the last time that the team participated in the World Volleyball Club Championship.

When Zamalek SC began to create the teams of Handball, Basketball and Volleyball, they saw the importance to build an arena to host the home matches of these teams. They first began to make the designs in 1970s, later they began working to build the covered hall, which was established in 1986, which they named of Abdulrahman Fawzi Hall, in the honour of one of the legend of Zamalek SC, he was the first ever Arab and African footballer to score at the FIFA World Cup, when he scored twice for Egypt in their 4–2 loss against Hungary in 1934, he is also Egypt's top goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup.

The opening ceremony of Abdulrahman Fawzi Hall was held with the opening ceremony of the 5th Arab Volleyball Championship in 1986, which was won by Zamalek volleyball team for the first time in the club's history, defeating MC Alger in the final which was held in Abdulrahman Fawzi Hall.
