2021 Hormozgan earthquakes

The 2021 Hormozgan earthquakes were a doublet earthquake event in Iran that occurred on November 14, 2021 with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.3 on the moment magnitude scale and body wave magnitude scale respectively. The two quakes occurred just a minute and a half apart.[1][2] The quakes killed 2 people and injured about 100.[3][4]

Tectonic setting

Bandar Abbas lies within the collision zone of the Eurasian Plate and Arabian Plate thus creating the well known Zagros Mountains and the Iranian Plateau. The main fault systems that funs through the Zagros Range is the Zagros fold and thrust belt which has created many destructive quakes along Iran over the years.[5]

Earthquakes

The first quake measured at 6.1 but was later revised to a 6.0 by the United States Geological Survey just a minute and a half later, the second quake happened which measured as a 6.4 by the Iranian Seismological Center but was once again revised to a 6.3. This event is considered as a doublet earthquake due to the event having not just one but two earthquakes happening in the same area with little time differences. Both earthquakes had an intensity of IX (Violent) on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale.[1][2] The quakes were felt as far away as Dubai as well, however not much damage was concentrated there due to the low intensity in the area.[6]

Impact

The earthquake triggered a widespread landslide along the mountains of the Geno Biosphere Reserve in the Hormozgan Province.[6] Two people were killed; one by a falling utility pole, and the other died while running from his home.[3][7] A total of 98 people were injured mostly due to widespread panic and some were injured from falling debris.[8][4]

The total cost of damage is estimated at 700 billion Iranian tomans ($US 16.6 million).[9] In the city of Fin in Bandar Abbas County, 70% of homes or roughly 3,000 structures were destroyed. An official said that the worst damages were in the villages Gishan Gharbi, Ab Shirin and Rudshour.[10]
