The 2021 Chiba earthquake was an earthquake that occurred in Japan at 22:41 on October 7, 2021.[1] The epicenter was in 4km west southwest of Chiba (35.577°N 140.070°E / 35.577; 140.070), The depth was 62.0km, and the magnitude was Mw5.9.[2][3] A maximum intensity of Shindo 5+ was recorded. It was the strongest earthquake to strike Tokyo since 2011 Tohoku earthquake.[4][5]

Impact

Minor damage and power outages occurred in the epicentral area, and at least 47 people were injured.[6] There were two instances of building fires. Due to the earthquake, transportation such as railroads stopped operating, and Nippori-Toneri Liner derailed in Adachi, Tokyo.[7][8][9] An oil refinery processing unit was suspended after a fire which had been extinguished occurred there.[10]
