2022 U.S. Open Cup

The 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is planned to be the 107th edition of the U.S. Open Cup, a knockout cup competition in American soccer. After the 2020 and 2021 competition were suspended and ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Soccer Federation announced that the 2022 edition of the U.S. Open Cup will start in March 2022 and will end in mid-September of 2022. After cancelling the largest ever 2020 U.S. Open Cup with over 100 teams in the tournament, United States Soccer Federation attempted an abbreviated version for the 2021 U.S. Open Cup. Both were eventually cancelled as the world continue to deal with the effects of COVID-19. United States Soccer Federation estimates the 2022 edition of the tournament could be the largest ever with 107 teams participating in the tournament proper.[1]

The First Round will have a total of 56 teams. This includes 11 from the open division which competed in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup qualification process, the 2021 National Amateur Cup Champions, Lansdowne Yonkers FC, and 44 teams from Division III leagues which includes USL League One and NISA. Twenty-four Division II teams from the USL Championship will join in the second round. This was to include the expansion teams Monterey Bay FC and Queensboro FC,[1] but Queensboro officials decided to push its inaugural USLC season to 2023.[2] Shortly after Queensboro's announcement Detroit City FC announced it would be joining USLC for the 2022 season, allowing for its participation in the Open Cup; it will be Detroit City's first time in the tournament as a fully professional club.[3] Thirteen Division I teams from Major League Soccer will join in the third round, with Austin FC, Charlotte FC, and Inter Miami making their Open Cup debut; twelve MLS teams will join in the round of 32.[1]

Atlanta United FC is the last team to have won the U.S. Open Cup, having done so in 2019.
