Al Thumama Stadium

Al-Thumama Stadium (Arabic: ملعب الثمامة‎ Malʿab ath-Thumāma) is a football stadium in Al Thumama, Qatar. It will be a venue in time for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.[2]

Construction FIFA World Cup Qatar

The Al Thumama Stadium is one of eight stadiums, which are built for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022.[3] It is located near Hamad International Airport.[4] A joint venture between Al Jaber Engineering of Qatar and Tekfen Construction of Turkey is significantly involved in the construction work. The architectural design, by the Chief Architect of Arab Engineering Bureau Ibrahim Jaidah,[5] takes its inspiration from the traditional taqiyah hat, a traditional cap which is worn by men and boys across the Middle East.[6][7] A 50,000 m2 (540,000 sq ft) public park will surround the stadium.[4] The stadium has a capacity of 40,000 seats. Following the World Cup, half of the stadium's seats will be removed and will be donated to other countries.[8][9] It opened on 22 October 2021.[7][10]

The construction of Al Thumama Stadium has, along with other stadiums build in anticipation of the FIFA World Cup 2022, been condemned by multiple human rights organizations. Amnesty International alleges that as many as 15,000 migrant workers have died while working under poor conditions at the stadium construction sites.[11]

History

The inauguration of the stadium took place on October 22, 2021, on the occasion of the Emir Cup Final.[12]

In May 2018, the Al-Thumama Stadium in France was awarded the MIPIM/Architectural Review Future Project Award in the Sports and Stadiums category.[13]

The stadium will host six games during the FIFA Arab Cup 2021 tournament that includes a semi final.[14]The semi final was played between Egypt and Tunisia.
