Stadium 974

Stadium 974 (Arabic: استاد 974‎, romanized: ʾIstād 974), previously known as Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, is a football stadium which opened on November 30st 2021 in Doha, Qatar. It is intended to be used for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.[1] The stadium is scheduled to host matches up to Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup.[2]

The Stadium 974 was officially unveiled with a special event on 20 November 2021. The number 974 represents the international dialling code for Qatar (+974), as well as the exact number of shipping containers used in the construction of the stadium.[3]

Design

The stadium has a planned capacity of 40,000 spectators[4] on a 450,000 square-meter waterfront site and is situated on an artificial promontory. The stadium is built according to a modular design, using recycled shipping containers, and is set to be dismantled after the 2022 World Cup concludes, making it the first ever temporary World Cup stadium. The Shipping containers and seats used in this stadium are later to be dismantled and provided as assistance to under-developed countries in Africa.[5][6] The concept of the stadium was designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects.[7][8]

Stadium 974’s innovative design is inspired by Qatar’s worldwide trade and seafaring. Due to its short lifetime, it set a new benchmark and guided the way towards more sustainable and more legacy-driven sporting competitions, opening up hosting opportunities to countries all over the world.

Construction FIFA World Cup Qatar

The Stadium 974 is one of eight stadiums being converted for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.[9] The procurement process for the stadium conversion began in 2017. The construction of the stadium involved HBK Contracting Company (HBK),[10] DCB-QA, Time Qatar, Fenwick Iribarren Architects (FI-A), Schlaich Bergermann Partner and Hilson Maron.[11][12]

The stadium received a four-star rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS).[13]

Stadium 974 will be the first stadium in the history of the FIFA World Cup that can be completely deconstructed.[14]

History

The Stadium 974 was officially unveiled with a special event on November 20, 2021, Also to mark one year countdown until the world cup kicks off. The modular stadium, built from shipping containers, held its first match on November 30, 2021 on the opening day of the FIFA Arab Cup, where United Arab Emirates won against Syria by 2-1. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was reported to be in the match attendance.[15]

Stadium 974 is the seventh tournament stadium completed by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) .
