Basketball at the 2016 Arctic Winter Games

Basketball competitions at the 2016 Arctic Winter Games were held in the AHL Gym in Nuuk, Greenland from 7 to 11 March 2016. The program included men's and women's junior teams.[1][2]

Women's junior

Four teams competed in the women's junior basketball competition.[3]

Ranking Round

The ranking round determined the seeding of the teams for the tournament. Each team would play against the three other teams. Team Alaska won against all three opposing teams, which seeded them 1st. Team NWT won against Yukon and Nunavut, while losing to Alaska. This seeded NWT 2nd. Team Yukon won over Team Nunavut, with Team Nunavut losing all three matches. This seeded Yukon 3rd and Nunavut 4th.[3][4]

Tournament

The first match of the tournament was Team NWT against Team Yukon, and took place on 10 March at 10:00. The match was won by Team NWT 66—50, with Alison Paige Buckland of NWT being the top scorer of the match, scoring 17 points. Behind her was Brooke Dwyer, also from NWT, with 14 and Landyn Blisner from Yukon with 11.[5] The next match of the tournament took place on 10 March at 16:00, and was between Team Alaska and Team Nunavut. Alaska won the match 72—48. The top scorer of the match was Angelline Isabella Nageak of Team Alaska, scoring 17 points. Alaskan Kendyl Carson was just behind with 14 points, and Alaskan Lily Weimann and Nunavut Alysha Maksagak both scored 13 points.[6] After this round the two losing teams, Yukon and Nunavut, would compete against in each in the bronze medal match, with Alaska and NWT competing against each other in the final. The bronze medal match took place on 11 March 15 at 8:00. Nunavut won the match 60—53, winning them the bronze medal of the event. Linda Howard of Nunavut was the top scorer of the match, scoring 20 points. Behind her was Kennedy Cairns-Locke of Yukon with 16 points.[7] The final match was played on 11 March at 12:00, between Alaska and NWT. Alaska won the match 94—46, winning them the gold medal of the event, and giving NWT the silver medal. The top scorers of the match were Kendyl Carson and Angelline Isabella Nageak of Team Alaska, scoring 32 and 24 points respectively. The Alaskan team managed to win all matches they competed in.[8][9]

Four teams competed in the men's junior basketball competition.[10]

Ranking round

The ranking round determined the seeding of the teams for the tournament. Each team would play against the three other teams. Team Alaska, NWT and Yukon all three won two matches and lost one, meaning that Team Nunavut lost all three matches in the ranking round. Based on the scoring in the games, NWT was seeded 1st, Alaska 2nd, Yukon 3rd and Nunavut 4th.[10][11][12]

Tournament

The first match of the tournament took place on 10 March at 12:00, and was between Team Alaska and Team Yukon. It was won 94—68 by Alaska. The top scorers of the match were Brandon Torrance of Alaska with 23 points, Skye Shipton of Alaska with 21 points and Ian New of Yukon with 19 points.[13] The next match was also held on 10 March, later in the day at 18:00. It was between Team NWT and Team Nunavut. NWT won 71—48, with the top scorers of the match being from NWT, those being Liam Larocque with 20 points and Kent Alacida with 18 points.[14] This moved Alaska and NWT on into the final to compete for the gold medal, while Nunavut and Yukon would compete for the bronze medal. In the bronze medal match, played on 11 March at 10:00, Yukon won 79—61. Rj Adrian Siosan of Yukon was the top scorer of the match, scoring 23 points, with Nunavut's Quinten Owen Flack and Ty Angnetsiak being right behind with 20 and 19 points respectively.[15] The final was played on 11 March at 14:00, between Alaska and NWT. Alaska won the match 65—53, winning the gold medal and leaving the silver medal for Team NWT. Skye Shipton of Alaska was the top scorer of the match, with 27 points.[16]
