Battle of Gorodechno

The Battle of Gorodechno was a battle between the army of the Austrian and Saxon allies of Napoleonic France under Prince of Schwarzenberg and Russian troops under Alexander Tormasov at Gorodechno, a town in Kobryn Uyezd, Grodno Governorate (now Pruzhany District, Brest Region) that was won by the Prince of Schwarzenberg.[2]

Battle

On 12 August 1812 a battle took place between a part of the Russian Army (about 18,000 men) under the command of General Tormasov and the Austrian and Saxon corps of the Austrian prince Schwarzenberg (about 40,000 men) that was won by the Prince of Schwarzenberg.[2]

Aftermath

St. Cyr, who had taken over from Oudinot, had resisted Wittgenstein at the First Battle of Polotsk. As the flanks were secured now by St. Cyr and Schwarzenberg Napoleon decided to go forward and met all objections with the comment "The wine has been poured, it must now be drunk."[2]
