Chadian passport

The Chadian passport is issued to citizens of Chad for international travel. The Chadian passport is written in three languages; French, English and Arabic.

As of 1 January 2017, Chadian citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 51 countries and territories, ranking the Chadian passport 85th in terms of travel freedom (tied with Bhutanese, Chinese, Malian and Rwandan passports) according to the Henley visa restrictions index.[1]

On 24 September 2017, citizens of Chad who held Chadian passports were banned from entering the United States of America. The reason was that Chadian authorities had run out of passport paper and were unable to submit sample passports to American authorities.[2]

Types of passports

The Republic of Chad issues three types of passports:

  • An ordinary passport
  • A diplomatic passport;
  • A service passport.

Issuance and validity

The Chadian passport is issued by the Ministry of Public Security and Immigration. It is valid for five years from the date of issue. A fee of 170 euros, payable in N'Djaména, is required to issue a Chadian passport.

Appearance of the passport

The ordinary Chadian passport is green in colour and has the coat of arms of Chad centred on the cover. The words "REPUBLIC OF CHAD" (in French, Arabic and English) are written above the coat of arms, "PASSPORT" (in French, Arabic and English) below. It has 32 pages.

The Chadian diplomatic passport is red in color and bears the words "PASSEPORT DIPLOMATIC" (in French, Arabic and English).[3]

The identity page of the Chadian passport includes the following data (headings in French and Arabic):

  • Photograph of the holder (Width: 50mm, Height: 50mm; Head height (up to the top of the hair): 68%; Distance from the bottom of the photo to the eye line: 56%)[4]
  • Type ("P" for "personal")
  • Country code ("TCD")
  • Passport number
  • Name of the holder
  • First names of the holder
  • Place of birth of the holder
  • Date of birth of the holder
  • Sex of the holder
  • Profession of the holder
  • Place of issue of passport
  • Date of issue of passport
  • Date of expiry of the passport.
