Cyrano (film)

Cyrano is a 2021 musical romantic drama film directed by Joe Wright and with a screenplay by Erica Schmidt, based on Schmidt's 2018 stage musical of the same name, itself based on the 1897 Edmond Rostand play Cyrano de Bergerac. The film stars Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Bashir Salahuddin, Ben Mendelsohn, and Ray Strachan.

The film had its world premiere at the 48th Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2021, and is scheduled for a one-week run in Los Angeles on December 17, 2021, prior to a theatrical release in the United States on January 21, 2022, by United Artists Releasing. It was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy (Dinklage) at the 79th Golden Globe Awards.

Production

It was announced in August 2020 that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had acquired the rights to the film, which was written by Erica Schmidt, based on her stage musical Cyrano. The film will be produced by Working Title Films, and Joe Wright was set to direct. Peter Dinklage and Haley Bennett will reprise their roles from the stage musical, with Ben Mendelsohn and Brian Tyree Henry also cast.[3] Kelvin Harrison Jr. joined the cast in September 2020.[4] Bashir Salahuddin later joined the cast to replace Henry.[5] Music for the film was written by members of The National, who also wrote the music and lyrics for the stage musical.[3]

Principal photography began in Sicily in October 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy.[6][5]

Release

The film had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2021.[7][8] By the end of its festival run, it will have screened at film festivals in the Hamptons,[9] Mill Valley,[10] Rome,[11] and Savannah.[12]

The film was originally scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 25, 2021, but the release date was then moved to December 31.[5] In November 2021, the film's release plans were changed by United Artists Releasing in an effort to better position itself for Academy Awards qualification and contention.[13] It is scheduled for an exclusive one-week run in Los Angeles on December 17, followed by a US limited theatrical release on January 21, 2022, before wider expansions in the following weeks.

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 87% of 23 reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.1/10.[14] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 73 out of 100 based on seven critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[15]
