79th Golden Globe Awards

The 79th Golden Globe Awards will honor the best in film and American television of 2021, as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). It is scheduled for January 9, 2022.[1] The nominations were announced on December 13, 2021 by rapper Snoop Dogg and HFPA president Helen Hoehne.[1][2]

Various media organizations (including regular U.S. broadcaster NBC), actors, and other creatives plan to boycott the ceremony over the HFPA's inadequate efforts to address the membership diversity of the organization.[1] The HFPA still plans to hold the ceremony, with or without another telecast partner.[1]

Boycott

On May 10, 2021, NBC announced that it would not televise the ceremony, in support of a boycott of the HFPA by multiple media companies over inadequate efforts to address the membership diversity of the organization, but that it would be open to televising the ceremony in 2023 if the HFPA were successful in its efforts to reform.[3] Following these events, the HFPA released a timeline for its reforms, which would see the process completed by the week of August 2.[4] On October 1, the HFPA released a list of 21 new members that it had recruited under these reforms.[5]

The HFPA then announced on October 15 that it still plans to hold the 79th Golden Globe Awards anyway on January 9, 2022, with or without a telecast.[1] It was then reported that the HFPA will suspend its normal submission process and screening requirements knowing full well that studios will not cooperate under the boycott, i.e. HFPA members will likely have to submit the nomination candidates themselves and they will not be invited to the official screenings of the eligible films.[6]

Details of the ceremony remained unclear when the HFPA announced the nominations on December 13, including whether the nominees would continue to boycott the ceremony.[1][7] If the HFPA is unable to find a broadcast partner to replace NBC, then it would be the first time since the 65th Golden Globe Awards in 2008 that there would not be a televised ceremony.[1][7]
