Encanto (film)

Encanto is a 2021 American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.[6][7] The 60th film produced by the studio, it was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, co-directed by writer Charise Castro Smith, and produced by Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer, with original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film stars the voices of Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo, Mauro Castillo, Jessica Darrow, Angie Cepeda, Carolina Gaitán, Diane Guerrero, and Wilmer Valderrama.

Not to be confused with Enchanted (film).

The film premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 3, 2021, and was theatrically released in the United States on November 24. It received positive reviews from critics and has grossed over $155 million worldwide.

Plot

While escaping her home from armed conflict, a young Alma Madrigal loses her husband Pedro but saves her triplet infant children Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno. The candle Alma carries with her becomes magical and creates a sentient house, the "Casita", for the Madrigals to live in. A village grows, protected by the Casita, and members of the Madrigal family are gifted superhuman abilities they use to help the villagers. However, Bruno's gift of precognition causes multiple conflicts that lead to the family vilifying him, while Mirabel, Julieta's youngest daughter, is neglected for having no gift at all.

During the evening of Pepa's youngest son Antonio being gifted with the ability to speak to animals, Mirabel suddenly sees the Casita cracking, but her warnings go unheeded when the Casita is found seemingly fine. Mirabel, resolving to save the magic of the Casita, goes around to investigate and question her family members. Her older sister Luisa—who possesses superhuman strength—suggests that Bruno's room may hold some clues to the phenomenon. There, Mirabel sees a cave of sand and pieces of a slab of opaque jade glass, which—when repaired—constitute an image supposedly showing her causing the Casita to fall apart. After Mirabel leaves, she discovers that her family members' gifts are starting to weaken.

At a dinner where Mirabel's oldest sister Isabela—who can make flowers grow at will—is to become engaged to her fiancé Mariano Guzman, Mirabel's oldest cousin Dolores—who possesses superhuman hearing—admits to overhearing Mirabel talking with her father about Bruno's vision. Mariano's proposal goes awry when the Casita once again begins to crack; and everyone's powers diminish, for which Isabela blames Mirabel despite the latter denying her involvement in the cataclysm. Mirabel discovers a hidden passage in the walls where she finds Bruno, who never actually left the house because he still loves his family. Mirabel convinces him to make predictions again and gets Antonio's permission to use the latter's room. Bruno makes another vision, which shows an image of Mirabel and Isabela embracing.

Mirabel goes to apologize but instead learns of Isabela's burden of being perfect and her desire not to marry Mariano. Having poured out her feelings, Isabela's powers start to develop and both sisters reconcile. However, Alma discovers Mirabel's actions, thoughtlessly blaming her for the family's misfortunes, but Mirabel finally snaps at her, saying how everything was truly all her fault for making everyone do things her way and the subsequent argument between the two destroys the Casita, upsetting and horrifying Mirabel.

Alma finds a grieving Mirabel at the river where Pedro died, finally admitting her fault of pressuring the family, forgetting that they were already one. Both reconcile and, with Bruno in tow, reunite the Madrigals to rebuild the Casita, assisted by the villagers; when Mirabel places the last doorknob, the Casita springs back to life and the magic returns.

Production

Development

In November 2016, Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that John Lasseter, the then-chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, had presented an idea for an animated project to himself and Byron Howard, while promoting his previous collaboration with the studio, 2016's Moana.[16] Miranda said work on the project had begun but was at an early stage.[16] On January 29, 2020, it was reported the studios were developing an animated film centered on a Latino family. Howard and Jared Bush were announced as the film's directors, with Bush being involved with the film's screenplay, while Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino were named as the film's producers.[17]

On June 18, 2020, the tentative title was revealed to be Encanto. The project was also confirmed to be the film Miranda was involved in, and it was reported to be about a girl in a magical family. While initial reports had said the film would be set in Brazil, Miranda stated on June 22 that it would actually be set in Colombia.[18] The same day, it was also reported that Charise Castro Smith would be a co-director in addition to co-writing the screenplay.[18] On December 10, 2020, the project was officially confirmed at a Disney Investor Day meeting, where a clip was shown, a release in fall of 2021 announced, and magical realism referenced.[19]

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote original songs for Encanto

By June 2020, Miranda had begun writing the film's music, which would have eight original songs in both Spanish and English.[18] On September 8, 2021, Germaine Franco, co-composer of the songs from Coco, began to score the film.[20][21][8] Composer John Powell was credited for the film as a score consultant for the music, making his return to Disney since Bolt. The soundtrack for the film was released for streaming on November 19, 2021. It peaked at number 162 on the US Billboard 200.[22]

Release and marketing

Encanto held its world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 3, 2021[23] and a Colombia premiere at the Teatro Colón in Bogotá, Colombia on November 23, 2021.[24] The film was theatrically released in the United States on November 24, 2021, in RealD 3D and Dolby Cinema.[25][26][27] The film will have an exclusive 30-day theatrical run, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.[28] Encanto is set to be released on Disney+ on December 24, 2021.[29] The film was paired with the short film Far From the Tree.[30]

In October 2021, Jakks Pacific announced it would release a new line of toys for the film.[31] The merchandise also includes tie-in books and T-shirts.[32] The new Funko Pop! figures of several characters from the film are available for pre-order on Entertainment Earth and will start shipping in January 2022.[33]

For its opening weekend at the box office, Disney spent $14 million on television advertisements to promote the film, generating 1.26 billion impressions. Deadline Hollywood said the marketing failed to distinguish the film from other Disney properties, with audience members being led to believe that it would be similar to 2017's Coco.[34]

Reception

Box office

As of December 15, 2021, Encanto has grossed $74.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $81.5 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $155.8 million.[4][5]

In the United States and Canada, Encanto was released alongside House of Gucci and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and was originally projected to gross $35–40 million from 3,980 theaters in its five-day opening weekend.[35] The film opened nationwide on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, and made $7.5 million on its first day, including $1.5 million from Tuesday night previews. Because of Thanksgiving, a federal holiday, 80% of K–12 schools in the U.S. were closed on Wednesday and 100% were closed on Thursday and Friday. Encanto went on to make $40.6 million in its first five days.[36] Of the 3.7 million moviegoers who saw the film, 52% were Latino and Hispanic, 51% were families, and 62% were female. Though its five-day opening gross was worse than Pixar's The Good Dinosaur ($55.4 million), which flopped at the box office in 2015, the film had the best opening weekend for an animated film during the COVID-19 pandemic.[37] In its second weekend, the film made $13.1 million,[38] a 53% drop lower than the second weekend results of The Good Dinosaur ($15.3 million) and 2010's Tangled ($21.6 million) but higher than 2009's The Princess and the Frog ($12.1 million).[39] In its third weekend, Encanto made $10 million, finishing second behind newcomer West Side Story.[40]

In its opening weekend outside of the U.S. and Canada, the film made $29.3 million from 47 markets; the top countries in its first five days were France ($3.5 million), Colombia ($2.6 million), the U.K. ($2.4 million), Korea ($2.2 million) and Italy ($2.1 million).[41][42] In its second and third weekends, the film earned $20.7 million and $13.6 million, respectively.[43] As of December 12, 2021, the film's largest markets are France ($9 million), Colombia ($7.9 million), the U.K. ($5.6 million), Spain ($5.5 million), and Russia ($4.8 million).[44]

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 90% of 166 reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.5/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Encanto's setting and cultural perspective are new for Disney, but the end result is the same – enchanting, beautifully animated fun for the whole family."[45] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 75 out of 100 based on 39 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[46] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale, while those at PostTrak gave it an 88% positive score, with 70% saying they would definitely recommend it.[34]

Mark Kennedy of the Associated Press said, "It's only appropriate that Encanto — fueled by eight original songs by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda — turns into that most special thing of all: A triumph in every category: art, songs and heart."[47] Kristen Page-Kirby of The Washington Post gave the film 3/4 stars, praising the film's visuals, characters and message and describing it as "a creative, fresh take on a story that is much more complex than your standard fairy tale."[48] Christian Holub of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a B grade, writing: "A smiling tale about familial reconciliation and learning to see your relatives for who they are rather than who you wish they were is never unwelcome."[49] Edward Porter of The Sunday Times gave the film 4/5 stars, describing it as "A deluge of clever, brightly coloured images and bouncy songs."[50] Simran Hans of The Observer also gave the film 4/5 stars; she described it as a "sparky musical", and wrote: "What's interesting and unexpected is the film's subtle acknowledgement of culturally specific generational trauma and displacement."[51] John Lui of The Straits Times gave the film 3/5 stars, writing: "It takes an extraordinary effort to make plainness interesting and this movie almost succeeds. The songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda help and so does the stunning visual design, but there is no escaping the guilty feeling that any one of Mirabel's relatives could be, or should be, the main character."[52]

Kyle Smith of National Review was more critical of the film, writing: "A thin story, dull characters, endlessly regurgitated gags, and a general air of pointlessness dog this fantasy about life in an enchanted house in an unspecified Latin country."[53] The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw wrote, "There are some nice moments and sweet show tunes, but Encanto feels like it is aspiring to exactly that sort of bland frictionless perfection that the film itself is solemnly preaching against, with a contrived storyline that wants to have its metaphorical cake and eat it."[54] Jake Wilson of The Age gave the film 2/5 stars, writing: "Whatever Smith and her team might think they’re doing, Encanto isn’t a realistic story of family dysfunction but a fairytale. And a fairytale without villains is a lot less fun."[55]
